[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Root didn’t even remember that someone was around him, so lost in himself until she grabbed his shoulders and he looked at her, his eyes wide open, not even blinking for a couple of minutes. His ears were picking up something, but he couldn’t quite make out the words until he heard the name which was reserved for only his family. To revisit Root’s thoughts on his first name, it wasn’t that he hated the name, but anytime anyone called him that, it reminded him of his family, and his mother, and all of that. His mother said that names were special. And he took that to a little bit of an extreme factor when she died, and never let anyone who was close to him call him that name, else he’d get made. He hated when anyone other than those with permission used his name.
“Don’t… ever call me that name, ever again. That name is special and should be cherished by those who use it. It shouldn’t be thrown around like something so commonplace. Only those I give permission, only those who wouldn’t abuse the name are allowed to call me it. It’s… one of the only things my mother gave me. And it’s the most special thing she gave me. So don’t ever use that name.” And either way, he felt like he needed to be called his surname because it would remind him of his father, whom he hated. Because he wasn’t truly worthy of the name his mother had given him, only the tie to the man who blamed him for his wife’s death. A constant reminder of at least one of the lives he destroyed when that building went down. Who was he to be called the name his mother gifted him? Something so special that she gave it to him. She called him it. No one else… no one besides his family were allowed to call him Alex.
“As for Mariko, she’s a lot tougher than she looks. After Daisuke? I did nothing. I lost myself, I avoided her, because I am weak. Don’t you get it? I’m not her strength, she’s her own strength. You… misunderstand a lot of things. I thought cops were supposed to be at least a little bit smart. I’m not going to give up. I will never give up, because I have a task, a purpose in my life, and I can’t…” Let Mom’s life be in vain. “I can’t waste it. I will push on, no matter how much I want to just let go… what you just… what just happened… was me dealing with it. Talking myself through it. Normally it just happens in my head. But… I can’t… focus anymore without speaking. My mind can’t hold onto all of my thoughts and some tumble out of my mouth. Don’t ever think for one minute that I will ever give up. And if you are going to give up, do it soon so we can sleep.”

Alexia was at a loss for words. She didn’t even know… How could she? It was a simple mistake that set the Ultimate scientist completely mad. It was almost as if he forgot the recent discussion he had with Alexia. Like he threw it in the trash for it to rot. At this point in time, Alexia had seemed to return to her roots. Back to reality. Root didn’t care about anyone did he… He just cared about himself. Even in a horrific time like this all he could care about was not the people around him, but himself. Alexia, overwhelmed with emotion, completely forgot what type of person he was. What the fuck was she doing? Having sympathy for this man. He won’t give up, sure. But that doesn’t mean that he does not have the strength to help others through this. … But that did not mean that Alexia would stoop to his level. “Root…” Alexia choked those words out of her mouth, she had been crying for too long. “I-I… I’m sorry”. That was all she could say at this point… She couldn’t really do anything else about the matter of his name… “I’m just… So sorry.” She wouldn’t lie to herself… But he was right about police officers. Even though we come off as people who bleed for society, that whole story wasn’t true. We were just following orders from the government. We always had. We never made decisions on our own. We swore and cursed to make ourselves look tough, as if we were the ones in control… Instead, the ugly truth is that, cops, praised for all of their hard work, were, in fact, single-minded citizens doing their part in society, just like any baker, butcher or scientist would do. And yet, here Alexia was… A police officer who was thinking the truth about police officers. Yet, Alexia knew she wasn’t like them… Yet, she didn’t think to herself for a second that she was smart. She just knew she ‘bended the rules’ a bit. Alexia wiped her eyes and the rage that she felt for him had seemed to disappear. “I don’t believe you would give up.” Alexia stood up and stretched. “I don’t think you are the type of person to ever give up.” She dragged herself over to the log resting in the water. “I-I may be dumb… But I know one thing… I know that your ‘love’ for Mariko is true. Even if you deny that fact. Just please... All I ask is that you help someone through this that needs help… I don’t care if it is Mariko, Willow, Koji or anyone! Just, for once, try to care for someone other than yourself.” Alexia sat in the log, staring down the steep incline that was ahead. “It’s either this, or walk down. It’s your choice.” She leant back on the hard wood waiting for his response. But she knew now not to force anyone into anything they want to do. She wouldn’t hurt anyone again. Alexander Root

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality She was sorry? She was sorry? Seriously? That was all she had to say? She fucked up with his name and all she could do was cry and say she was sorry. Of course, he should be more understanding given their situation. He knew that it was hard on everyone, even him. But in the end, to show kindness was to show weakness, and that weakness would get those he truly cared about hurt. When he showed Mariko kindness it was because he wanted her to like him, wanted her to care for him so he didn’t feel so useless. Because he cared for her so much, and by avoiding her like he had been since Daisuke’s execution was his way of ‘protecting’ her from him showing kindness, because he just couldn’t bring himself to be mean to her. He’d lost his mother, his sister was either dead or out in the world thinking he was dead. He couldn’t help but think his sister would be happy (that wasn’t true, but Root believed it) because she no longer had to deal with him; their mother’s killer was finally gone. Or at least that was what he always told himself. So maybe being here was for the better. But he couldn’t help but wish he was truly worth something to someone. He wished that his mother’s death wouldn’t be in vain, that he truly would matter to the world. And the only way to do that without hurting those he liked and cared about in the process was to be a rude, but brilliant scientist. His loneliness was the price he had to pay to not hurt others. His loneliness was the price to pay to make a difference in the world where he didn’t end up killing anyone else.
“You know nothing about me. Nothing. I care about others a whole lot more than I do myself. Why would I care about myself? I’m just a fucking moron who likes to pretend they’re smart, and in the process I end up hurting people.” Stop it. Stop talking about that. You’re not allowed to say anything like that aloud. Why did he care what she thought about him anyways? Was it because initially he thought of her like his mom? Was this really what his mom would think of him now? No. No. She was only barely similar to his mom. His mom was always accepting no matter what, she loved with her whole heart, and while they fought and said things they regretted before, she would never think that he didn’t care for others. “I would be absolutely no help to anyone. I’m a fucking mess. I can barely get myself through this; what makes you think I could help anyone at all?”
Root’s eyes moved to the log where Alexia sat in. He bit his lower lip and looked at Alexia. She knew his fear of water, and the only way to show her that ‘it wasn’t a big deal’ when it really was, would be to ride with her, so she would never use it against him. Without a word, Root took a seat in the log with Alexia, and crossed his arms, putting on a confident show even though he was already freaking out about the water, and cursing himself for being so stupid, already telling himself this was the end and he was going to die.

With both people seated, a maniacal snicker resounded from the shadows. Monokuma had popped out in a grey veil, with a large matronly black dress covering his body. "Snifff...upupupu...It's so sad to know you're leaving, Roberto...but you cannot leave if I kiiiiiiiiill you first!"
And throwing a large knife, it struck the lever and set the Flume into motion.
"Hmm...I hope you enjoyed that short telenovela, kiddies!"

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Here he was, sitting in the stupid water ride and he was having second thoughts. He didn’t want to die to just prove a point. Maybe he should get out - And then Monokuma arrived and the ride was set in motion by a knife. He wasn’t sure what the bear was playing at, but that was not enjoyable. Plus, neither of them were ‘Roberto’. It could’ve been better if -
Shit. The ride was moving and the ride was falling towards a huge body of water, and Root’s heart was pounding against his chest so loud he was sure it would reverberate in the log and amplify the sound even more. Except logically a heart couldn’t really pound that loud, even if illogically it felt like that it was. He bit his lip to keep from making any sound indicating his extreme fright right now. If he could, he might die from fright right now. His eyes were shut tightly and he could feel the air moving around him. Focus on something else. With the air moving around him at such a rate, the velocity of the log had to be -
SPLASH! They landed in the wave pool and the log slid along the water. Don’t worry Alex, he told himself, the buoyancy of the log was enough to keep them afloat. He opened his eyes and immediately regretted it because while he knew it before he could see himself surrounded by water, and this log was the only thing keeping him afloat. He had to figure out how to get to shore without getting into the water. Standing up would throw off the balance of the log, and possibly tip them over.
“See?” Root managed to say, “I am not actually afraid of water. Ha. Heh.” Except for the fact he was freaking out in his mind.

...
Alexia's mind was too clustered to think about anything else right now... Root was ridiculously mysterious and Alexia still knew not that much about him. She supposed it was for the better. Just as she was thinking that, he face splashed with water and she was knocked out of her deep thought. Returning to reality.
"Ah!" She wiped the water off her eyes and face and giggled. It was all in the name and at least she had someone there to experience it with. A... Friend, if you will.
"See?" She smiled "It wasn't that bad was it! You must not be that afraid of water, huh?" Right now, she forgot about the past events that had just occurred, because she was having fun. She was taking her mind off things, which is something she had not done for a long while."
The log reached the end and Alexia stepped out, brushing herself off as she waited for Root to exit as well.

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality No. Root was absolutely terrified. When Alexia got off the log, Root held on for dear life. When she spoke, he tried to concentrate on her words, understanding what she said, but a little preoccupied with the fact that while the ride was at an end, and one side of the log was by sweet, sweet land, the other sides were still surrounded by water, and they had to step off the log. “Of course not,” Root said quickly, trying not to allow his fear to show through his voice. He slowly stood up in the log, calculating the areas where he would have to apply the force of his body in order to keep the log from tipping over.
However.
His sleep deprived mind had a hard time approximating distances, and he even forgot his weight for a moment. And of course, with his perception of distances off, he just so happened to set his foot right on the one small area that would cause him to lose his balance, and fall off the side of the log, right into the water. He cursed loudly as he knew the inevitable was about to come, as he seemed to fall in slow motion. He could almost see his life flashing before his eyes because he was sure that the end was here, and now, all because he was a cocky idiot trying to prove to this girl that he wasn’t afraid of water, when in the end that water would be the end of him.
The water wasn’t even that deep, but it was deep enough for Root to flounder a bit, and be unable to just stand up and be fine. No matter what actions the police officer would take to try to help him, a hand maybe, or maybe she would jump in to help, he wouldn’t accept, despite the obvious panic on his face as he took a deep breath, and managed to barely catch the edge of the surface. Except for the fact he couldn’t pull himself up. At least he was safe for now. All he had to do… all he had to do was concentrate in one push and up he went, onto the surface, and he laid down on his back, breathing heavily, proud in himself, and still quite panicked despite being out of the water. If he had gotten to the edge any later, he wouldn’t have had the strength to pull himself up. He stared above him and allowed himself to breath.
What he wouldn’t give for a nap right now.
