Root and Monokuma made a deal during Chapter 2, he could get a camera if he kills someone. At first he is resistant, but he says he would think about it.
The trial occurs, and the next motives come up. Root still is resistant, Birdie shows up and promises to free them all. Root doesn’t trust him, but wants to keep him alive because he’d be afraid of being voted as executed. He can’t help but think, unlike this guy I could make a true promise if I got out of here. But who would I kill?
It takes a short amount of time, but Root makes his plan. He’s observed that Mugen goes out at night, and killing the one he loves would be the best murder to get away with, because no one would suspect him (so he planned a double murder, so he could get to dissect Mugen in the first place and he'd kill Mariko so he could get away with it). So he gets the gun ready, the date ready, chloroform for Mugen ready, the bomb from Monokuma ready.
They are out on a date, in the theater, and Root starts to have second thoughts. He can’t go through with it. He just can’t. And then Shabots bursts in and Root tries to stop him, then handing Mariko the gun. She shoots the boxer up and he dies. Root rushes to her and takes the gun away, and hugs her tightly. He turns her away from Shabots and tells her ‘It’s alright. We’ll figure this out. I won’t let this game win against you. I’ll take care of him. Don’t look, then you don’t have to lie about what I’m doing, because you won’t know, right?’ He hugs her once more. ‘I love you, Mariko.’ Then he goes behind her back, gun in hand. There is a pause and he looks at the back of her head. He raises the gun. ‘Don’t worry, Mariko. I’ll get you out of this.’ Click. Mariko turns around to see the barrel of a gun pointed at her. Cue Pistol Whip.
Root carries the unconscious Mariko to the church. He couldn’t save her, he knew, so he had to go back to his original plan. He leaves her body in the church and gets a new gun, shoots her in the head. He takes purple girl down and hangs Marko in her place. He had to kill her. This way it was fast. This way she wouldn't be executed. This way they wouldn't think she was a killer. And with the shot, not only did Mariko die, but he killed himself in the process.
Then it’s time for Mugen. He gets his rag of chloroform and captures Mugen. Then he tears the ghost apart, only to find that Mugen still lives. Finally, he leaves, bomb ready to explode when someone enters, and cleans everything up in the laundry room. He goes back to his room, and sleeps.
He goes to the laundry room in the morning and cleans up everything. He went to the nurse's to plant stuff. Theater and discovers Mamouro, oh shit its not a dream, maybe Mariko wasn't actually part of it, hopefully, but I gotta cover my tracks, and hopefully Mariko is fine either way. He goes to the cafe to grab a knife, he goes to the castle to 'look for Mariko', and cuts his hand to plant blood in Alexia's room. Wave pool for good measure. ? ? ? Explodes, he knows what happened. Oh god, did the Mariko part happen? No, no, please no. Let it be a dream. Ignia tells him about Mariko, fuck, its not a dream. Denial. To the church.
It is then that everything crashes down on him. He killed the one he loves and he’s overcome with guilt and grief. Tired doesn’t help and he cries.
In trial, his story: He killed all three. Mariko did nothing. He was just trying to get out of here. He’s the hope traitor, but if Ignia is selected as blackened... well four of them get out, they can get out. Either way, he has a time machine plan. He can save everyone. He can reverse everything. It's his only chance.
Nope. Willow is discovered as traitor. Mariko is dead. Root is executed. Ken is executed. Taro is dead. Chapter 3 end.
