[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Was he suggesting that he and Wendy – This was why he was pissed off that Taro went into his room. He got all these misconceptions about him. If they got out of this park alive, he didn't want Wendy to have to explain these things to this idiot. Except for the fact that Root was pretty sure Taro was gonna die. But there was a possibility that they found a way out of here before someone ended up killing the critter.
His left fist clenched and he swung around, his fist aimed right for Taro's face, the movement providing some release, but a connection would cause some pain in his hand and hopefully Taro's face as well. God damn it. He didn't want to lose control like that, but the lack of sleep combined with Taro's frustrating insults. Root took several deep breaths and paused just for a moment before getting to Taro's answer.
"Mariko isn't my mom. My mom was much different, an author. She was very bold and happy all the time, she-she was a shining ball of light in a world full of dark. Excuse my poetry, but I'm sure she'd be proud of that, sounds like something she'd have in one of her books. For once, you're right, I blame myself, because I killed her. I'm not mad at her dying before my dad, I'm pissed at myself for killing her instead of him." Root shook his head feeling his fist itching to fly towards Taro again, even if it was hurt due to the first punch. Maybe by the end of the day he would break his own fingers with this punching thing. "Wendy isn't a love, she isn't a-a bitch. She's my sister you dumbass. I love her too. She's the only person outside this park I love. Even if she's a director too, Mariko and Wendy aren't the same. Both are embarrassed easily and incredibly kind, but that's the end of the similarities. Mariko loves food, she is passionate about the things she does, she is shy in larger social groups, the little voice she uses when she speaks, the way her cheeks flush when someone says something and she's embarrassed, the way she pulls her hoodie over her head; those are just a few of the reasons I love her."
Did… Did he really just say that last bit? To Taro?

Taro spat up the blood from inside his mouth. Not because of Root's punch, because that resulted in his black eye. He spat up blood because he accidentally bit his tongue.
"So, obviously it was Wendy on the ElectorID's found footage montage. And I was also right about you and Mariko. The main problem here is for a super genius, you are being a bigger idiot than I am pretending to be. There is a one in four chance that your girlfriend is behind all of this. And, more importantly, I'm almost certain that she will kill someone before this game is over. If not behind this, she will snap under pressure. And you are going to have complete faith in someone like that. I know she only reminiscent of Wendy that's, well let's face fact, dead right now, but you are being an idiot for falling in love with someone like that. Stop being so blind to that truth."
He lightly patted his cheek a few times, almost as to say Good boy.
"Now that's out of the way, any books that I might have read from your mother?"

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality He was asking for it, Root told himself. He was asking to be punched again. And that's why when he swung his fist towards Taro the instant he finished the sentence about his mom, he didn't feel bad, at least in the moment. Afterwards with the sting in his hand, which was starting to bruise, he regretted losing control again. What would his mom think? She always said that violence was never the answer. But it made him feel so much better that he could defend himself against such stupidity with not only his mind but his body as well.
"It's not stupid… to fall in love," Root growled clenching his teeth when he wasn't speaking to stop himself from trying to punch the guy again, "Love is… love makes you strong. That's how I know those videos have to be fake. Because Wendy isn't dead. I can feel it. Those videos were… edited to make us think they were dead. In the end… it won't matter if Mariko is behind this. It won't matter if she kills someone, because… because I love her, and I will protect her no matter what. If she wants me dead, then I die. I die. Because when you love someone none of that matters, all that matters is their happiness. You can't help who you fall in love with, Taro. It's a force that even science has had a hard time explaining. Your brain becomes addicted to those you love, like a drug, and you become addicted to that person. As long as she is happy, she can kill all of you and I won't care."
If she was a traitor, if she was behind all of this, really Root wouldn't care, and he'd defend her until his last dying breath. Because there was always the possibility he was wrong, and Wendy could be dead. Even if she wasn't, she probably was happy he was out of her life anyways, because who would want a brother who killed their mother and nearly killed her as well? A brother who always caused her harm because of his talent, who didn't want to cause her to be in danger, but it always seemed to happen that way.

Taro rubbed his cheek with the water bottle, still cold enough to make as a substitute ice pack.
"You dumb cunt." Taro said in monotone. "Do you really think Mariko, if she is the mastermind, gives two fucks about you? Hell, Mrs. Mastermind probably desecrate your mother's corpse with a gleaming smile. If she isn't the mastermind, then you know for a fact that she can easily manipulate a puppy dog like you into becoming her victim. It's the perfect crime if they victim makes sure everything works out perfectly. No notes, no struggling, no problems. I could understand if you were crushing on literally anyone else."
Taro spat out more blood from his mouth. "Besides, loving someone that you are willing to die for them less than two weeks in is just some bad RPG mechanic. Wendy? I understand. You knew Mariko way before all this? I understand. But she isn't and you didn't. That is why you will crash and burn."
Blood started dripping out from the corner of his mouth and preceded to wipe it down with his coat sleeves. "Now, was your mother a horror writer, a romcom or, hell, maybe she was an erotic fiction writer. She'll need some escape from marrying your deadbeat father. Probably why you have such a fucked up concept of love."

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality What was left of Root's control snapped, and he clenched his teeth and he sent his fist towards Taro again, his other fist following soon after, he grabbed him by his collar and pushed him to the nearby surface of the aquarium roughly, as he continued aiming to hit Taro as many times as he could, taking several deep breaths, until he finally stopped, both of his hands starting to bleed and bruise. Hmph. He'd have to take care of his hands later. But he felt better, hitting Taro like this, releasing that pent up stress that had been building in him, and Taro was getting the brunt end of it. Finally, Root turned away, took a few steps, and sat down facing away from Taro.
"You just don't understand. I hate my father, but he's a good man too. My mother loved him and he loved her. You don't get to judge anything in my life. Just because I hate someone doesn't mean they are a bad person. I hate a lot of people. But you can't hate without love." Root closed his eyes and lowered his head, trying to calm himself. He opened his eyes and looked at his hands in his lap. They were bloody from hitting him and bruising, as swelling set in place. He really should have learned how to punch correctly to avoid injuring himself in the process, but he didn't, and so this was his punishment for such violence.
"That's the thing with trust. You trust that they won't end up manipulating you like that. Mariko isn't the type of person who would do that. You know nothing about her. I don't know a whole lot about her, either, but I know more than you. She would never, ever, kill anyone on purpose. She could be lying, acting like the girl I know, but I told you, I don't care. Do you not understand what I'm trying to say? I can't control how I… I feel. I want to be with her all the time, I want to see her smile and laugh and to feel her touch." He let his head dip and closed his eyes again. "There is a possibility I will crash and burn, but that's the risk you have to take when you love someone. Without love, there is nothing to live for, and so I chose to live for her. I live for my sister, and my deceased mother. I live for Mariko, so I can at least try to help her survive this hell hole we're living in. I live for love."

Despite Root's rage, not a lot of damage was done to Taro. Sure his face was cut, bruised and even covered in blood, but he's seen worse. Luckily, Root didn't go for the arm. Secretly, while Root was not facing him and overall distracted, he reached into his pockets. Previously, after the first trial, Taro took one last look around the shop which had been completely cleaned. While touring, he found something no one else had mention: a recorder. The previous purpose of such a device was to let kids with learning disabilities record the teacher's lecture. However, Taro decided to use it to record his conversation with Root after the first punch. He turned off the device, after acquiring what he came to Root for. All that was left was to deflect suspicion off of him.
"You know, you don't keep your thumbs into your fist when you punch. That will just end up breaking your thumb. We have nothing better to do, so why not ask Mamouro if he can teach you how to fight. Hell, nobody here will consider that course of action unreasonable."
He continued to straighten his tie again and fixed his collar and sit next to Root.
"My mom and I were driving when we came across a railroad crossing. Just then, the train derailed due to a rock slide that just happened a minute before the collision. It literally smashed into our car with full force. I was quadriplegic temporarily while she became ten pints of blood scattered in the car. When you get the experience I get, it's no one's fault what happens to you. Sure, I was the one who needed a lift, but I didn't cause the rock slide. Nature did that one. Because mother nature is a bitch. If you really did kill your mother, you would have been in prison. Which means, you would have known how to fight. But, because you don't, you didn't kill her. And she is not going to let you die over a complete stranger. She is still watching over you like a haunting, but one that you want to have happen to you. Take my advice, don't fall that hard in love unless we have figured out who the traitors are."
He took out the water and poured it on a napkin that he previously ate an apple with. He then started to clean the wounds out of Root's hands.

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Root jerked his hands away from Taro. Of course they were injured, and his right hand was in worse shape than his left. He probably broke something, or something. He really should have thought of that, because it would make it harder to write his notes when he needed to. However with enough pain medication, and proper treatment his hands would get better. Since his right was in worse shape it would take longer and had a higher chance of something being broken. Either way, he'd make sure not to let it affect the way he ran. He'd just ignore the pain, and eventually it would go away. The pain would be good too, to keep him awake. Maybe he would pass on the painkillers. But he wouldn't let Taro do anything to 'help' him. He'd take care of himself.
However, he wouldn't ask Mamouro for tips. Mamouro was an idiot. He'd rather break his hands even worse than go to him for anything. He was too prideful for such an act. But he wasn't going to tell Taro that. That would probably lead to some sort of other wrong conclusion about his life he rather not have to explain and end up trying to punch the guy again. And well, his hands were injured enough. He'd rather not have to wait longer for them to get better. He clenched his left fist, but his right wouldn't obey.
"It's sad, your mother died, and you can blame mother nature on it. But I killed my mom. I did. It wasn't something I couldn't control. I made a mistake, and it ended up killing her. Just because no one found out, because I was able to hide it well enough so I wouldn't be arrested, doesn't mean it didn't happen. There is no… life after death, so she can't be looking over me still. And it wouldn't matter, she'd like Mariko too," Root turned his body away from Taro, so he was sitting perpendicular to where he was before, effectively facing away from Taro again. The lack of sleep was toying with his emotions and just the memory of what happened was causing Root's eyes to begin to water, but he willed the tears to not fall. "I've already told you, I can't not fall in love. I-I've already fallen. It's like… I did know her once upon a time, but I can't remember. In any case, I trust her, and I know she would not kill anyone on purpose. I trust that… she really is who she shows me. And if she isn't, like I said, I don't care. All I care about… all I care about is her to be happy."

Taro sat in silence for a few minutes.
"Obviously this attitude of yours is suicidal at best. I hope you do realize that. If you could just tell me how she died, I can convince you that you are not at fault here. Wendy would back me up on this. You are not at fault for any deaths whatsoever."

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality He didn't understand. He would never understand. He didn't understand anything, why was he even continuing to speak? Why did he feel the need to say any of this, instead of just hitting Taro and leaving? Perhaps it was because he knew violence was never the answer and he wanted to try to teach Taro something. Or more likely, these things had been eating away at him here, and it was nice to get them off his chest to someone who he didn't care if they hated him. And Taro's stupid strategy would work to his advantage as well. If he tried to spout anything that he said here to anyone, who would trust him? It was like the ultimate confession priest because if he tried to tell anyone no one would believe him.
Just thinking about that memory made Root have to close his eyes tightly, forcing the tears welling up in his eyes to fall. No, no more tears. Taro might see. He couldn't let himself show that weakness. Then again, if Taro wanted to kill him, he was pretty sure he'd already given the guy enough ammunition of how to kill him. He hoped that Taro wouldn't snap and kill him. Or Mariko, because if he targeted her, well... it'd kill him on the inside, kill his soul, essentially.
"You can try. My father has spent years agreeing it was all my fault. My sister has tried to convince me otherwise. How do you think you can convince me, when my own sister could not? You really want to know what happened? I was showing my family an experiment, where I would collide two particles and test to see if a graviton would ascend into another dimension of the universe to effectively prove String Theory. My father was never any part of this, so he didn't come. But my mother and my sister were both there. They were the only ones there. Something went wrong. I still… don’t know what went wrong. All my calculations were correct, I had checked all the machinery not long before. Something went wrong and… everything exploded. All three of us were caught up in the explosion. I managed to stand and found my mother half buried in some rubble, and she died… right in front of my eyes, because of me. My sister and I weren't the same ever again. You were right, my memory sucks. My body is eternally injured. Physically? I'm probably the easiest target here. I can't stand for too long or my knees go out. I am constantly in pain. It's my punishment for killing her. And I accept it. But my sister… she suffers far worse than I do. And I have to find a solution to the damaged I caused. I can't die until that happens."

Taro allowed Root to be in silence for a minute or two after he was done.
"I can tell you one thing. People have a tendency to be completely blind to the obvious solution when they were so worked up about the issue. I know for a fact that you want to try to fix everything that is possible to fix, and the best way to do that is to drop the issue for a few weeks and seek therapy. You have classic PTSD. Hell, you might be subconsciously not solving the problem because it's the only thing that still keeps her memory alive. I've seen stranger things before. Instead of focusing on the physical problems, like your memory or only god knows what happen to Wendy, assuming she didn't get off with scrapes and bruises, focus on the emotional problems that occurred. I highly doubt that she doesn't feel partly responsible, no matter how much of a stretch it is."
Taro drank some of his water, which reasonably got tainted with blood.
"The only other way I can explain this to someone is by example. A lone surgeon is currently stationed in Africa as part of the Doctors Without Borders. During his stay, he learns of a boy who has six months to live if he doesn't get a surgery immediately. On the way over to the boy, he gets into a car crash. The crash severely damages his leg. As a result, he needs five months of rehabilitation before he can use it correctly. If the surgeon instead goes and perform surgery on the boy, the pain in his leg will make it difficult to concentrate on the surgery. As a result, he will most likely kill his patient on the table. So, what is the doctor going to do? Does he perform the surgery or not? The smart move will be to heal himself before he heals the boy for a greater chance at success at the surgery. He still has a month of time left before the boy dies, but it's better than potentially making a fatal error on the surgery."

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Him? Therapy? Ha. There was no time for that. His own mental state didn't matter. All that mattered was that his mind was able to think correctly and he could fix the problems he had. The way he was going to fix them? Well, he was currently studying the universe and the universe held all the answer. In a way, science was how he coped with everything, delving deep into his own mind with just logic, and leave the self-hatred behind even a few moments, it was bliss. It was wonderful to not feel anything because he was so focused on a problem. However, all of his projects had a meaning. He studied black holes for his mom. He studied the brain so he could cure Wendy's memory issues. He studied how to build a camera for Mariko. He studied the universe for those he cared about.
"Hmph. It's been years. I'm alright. I can see the scene clearly and I know it's my fault. Your example… it might work, if you increased the rehabilitation period to years. But even waiting those five months could put the boy's life in jeopardy. Whereas, the doctor could use painkillers, and mask the pain, even if it means his rehabilitation period would need to be longer afterwards because he makes the injury worse by not allowing it to heal until after the operation. You dull the pain, until the problem is solved. Otherwise, you'll miss the deadline."
The longer he took to figure out everything, the longer it was that Wendy would suffer. The longer Mariko would go without real confidence, as the confidence he offered to her was but a sham, not real. He couldn't wait longer than he had to. And right now he was being forced away from his work, but the instant he could go back to it, he would go back, and try to pick up momentum once more. He'd pick up his pace. All the time he was wasting right now was going to take weeks to make up.

"Do me a favor. Don't just pass my advice off as just nonsense. Just think it over for a bit. Always keep it in the back of your mind. And there's absolutely no reason why you can't go to therapy and do the science behind finding a cure. Trust me on that."

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Oh yeah, because he knew him so well, that Taro would totally know what was best for him. He'd lived years with this now, and he was doing just fine. Just look at him. Already a Nobel Prize and he wasn't even legally an adult yet. His mother would be proud if she were still alive. Of course his dad wasn't really proud, though Root knew he at least tried before his mother died, and after that, well, his dad stopped trying to accept him. He got that prize for attempting to try to understand the universe in a different way than most scientists believed. Of course his black hole research was something many others were looking into, but just as always he was looking at it differently. Because he thought differently.
"No, there isn't. I'm fine. I've lived years with this on my shoulders, and I'll live until I die like this. There's nothing that can fix me. I'm not broken. I'm just fine, and I'll stay just fine forever. Just like I always have been." The way he said this was unconvincing to even himself as he opened his eyes and a couple of tears fell to the ground in front of him. He wiped his eyes with his sleeve and told himself he needed to get it together. "Why should I trust you? You barely even know me. You're an idiot. All you've done is insult me, and my family and those I love. You don't know anything. And you never will."
Root chanted it over and over in his head. Taro was wrong. He had to be wrong. There was nothing wrong with him. Taro is the one who needs help. And as long as he kept telling himself that, he would be fine. He wouldn't have to worry about anything at all and he could just get on with his research so he could save his sister from being punished for his wrong doing. So he could save Mariko from a death unknown right now but probably at his hand. So he could save his mother's memory. Taro was wrong. He had to be wrong. There was nothing wrong with him. Taro is the one who needs help. Taro was wrong. He had to be wrong. There was nothing wrong with him. Taro is the one who needs help. Taro was wrong. He had to be wrong. There was nothing wrong with him. Taro is the one who needs help.

"You shouldn't trust me. Hell, it's like those Verity Jones novels. I don't trust a single person she's investigating, especially when it comes down to anything surrounding the father. Unfortunately, the last book in the series, A Shadow in the Past, was taken by Monokuma before I could finish it. Bear certainly knows how to bring despair. Anyways, I digress. It's completely normal for you not to fully trust in me. And I am truly sorry about insulting your family. I just had..." Taro stopped himself short. He cannot reveal the tape. It's absolutely necessary for later.

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Verity. Jones. Root's eyes were wide open and the stared at the ground while Taro talked more. Oh god. The last one. The last book. How did Taro… How did he know? He didn't seem like the type to read detective novels like Verity Jones. Then again, his mother's books were fairly popular, so it wasn't odd that someone may make a passing note of her books, but Taro? That was even more insane. Root took a sharp breath in and continued to stare at the ground.
"I… haven't read the last one of those either. The author died shortly before… before it was released," Root said quietly, thinking about how he had refused to read that last one because after he did, there would be no more books to read of his mom's. He remembered that Wendy always wanted to be Verity Jones, and she would walk around the house looking for clues. Sometimes Root would play the victim, sometimes the bad guy, and sometimes her occasional partner in solving crime (and even once in her novels, she'd taken from one of the games they were playing where Root played both bad guy and partner, even to the point of calling the partner/bad guy Alex), and the two of them would laugh and have fun while their mom watched and sometimes laughed along, sometimes playing with them. "There is nothing that you could do to have me forgive you for such an act. No one insults my family, the ones I love… I won't forgive you, Taro."
Now, now, his mom would be so disappointed. While his father was the religious sort, he'd probably be disappointed too, but it wasn't like he wasn't always a disappointment to the man, and he was always a hypocrite when it came to religious beliefs (ie love everyone, hate the gays). But his mom, his mom always forgave, no matter the crime. But it was just something Root himself had a hard time doing. Heck, he couldn't even forgive himself. There were many things his mom taught him he had a hard time putting into practice, such as accept everyone the way they were, or be nice to everyone you meet. Things like that. Eventually, he might be able to put them into practice, but for now, he wasn't able to, possibly because he was too immature to really think about them and truly believe in them.
