[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Water. Water everywhere. Of course, there were other parts of the park which he could go to instead, but Root was pretty sure (or maybe it was the paranoia) someone was going to die, and he needed to know his surroundings. He'd retrieved an extra notebook and some writing utensils from the supply store, wondering where he was going to have to hide his stash of notebooks, where he was going to set up base. But for now, he had focused on writing everything he could remember when he got his notebook and began scoping out the entire new section of the park. And yes, that meant the water parts. Of course, he wouldn't ever actually go into the water, nor near it. He'd just observe from afar.
It didn't help that he was already tired. The night before the bear announced they could not sleep until someone was killed he didn't sleep. Almost at all. He was so close to figuring out his… what was he working on before… oh he knew it was something… something… black holes? Black holes! That's right. For they held the key to time travel. Any self-respecting scientist with any sort of interest in physics knew that. It was just a matter of how they could harness the power of a black hole, how one could enter the black hole at precisely the correct angle in order to no longer move in space, but move in two directions of time, then escape the black hole in the destination…
He should be writing this down so he didn't forget it again, and hopefully he'd not lose it forever. He rather not start everything over during this time he hadn't his information, then again, without what he worked on already, any work during this time would be pretty useless, he was sure, not only because he was without his work wall, but also because he was exhausted. It'd already been another full night of no sleep, but he knew he had to keep working or he'd fall asleep and he couldn’t allow that to happen.
Finally, today, Root told himself, he'd go to one of the water places, and start off small – Not small, not small at all, he thought as he walked into the Aquarium and the sheer size of it all and how the glass could break and he'd die crushed under the water – no, no, calm down Root. He had to calm down. His emotions were out of whack already with the whole no sleep thing. Of course, he'd gone longer without sleep before, but that didn't make things that much easier. Especially when he decided a good way to keep him awake was to go to a 'small' area with water, and see how he fared. It was working in keeping him awake. His heart rate had shot up as soon as he entered place.
After a moment completely frozen in fear, Root took a couple steps in, his heart pounding so hard he felt like he was going to have a heart attack from it. The pounding almost hurt as he took a few more steps in, his eyes focusing on the water until –
He looked up and was fascinated by the sight. A giant squid. His mind immediately focused on the creature and the pounding stopped, no longer fixated on the water that the creature was floating in. He was writing in his journal, not even looking at writing his notes on his observations of the creature. Oh this was so cool. This was amazing. He never got the chance to study a giant squid before. Oh this was amazing. This was amazing. This was amazing.

"Enjoying the view?" Taro stated, not knowing whose footprints was behind him. Taro had entered the aquarium earlier to watch fish. He found the patterns the fish swim in very interesting. It was soothing. Most people would consider it counting sheep, but Taro was more interested in it then anything else. It was more along the lines of a playground full of kindergartners. It's peaceful to watch kids who don't have to deal with the reality of adulthood. But yet, the parents still need to be vigilant in order to protect them from any harm. Taro had no idea when he walked into the aquarium and had no idea how long he's been there staring at fishes, but he assumed a couple of hours.
He turned around and saw Root staring at him, obviously annoyed by his presence. He was probably even more annoyed that Taro didn't look or act like someone whose been up for over 24 hours. He probably won't feel any of the symptoms of the lack of sleeping for a while. Probably a couple of days or so. But, that aside, conversation could do him good.
"So, what's on your mind Mr. Alexander Root? Look, I'm sorry I investigated your room, but I was just investigating to be prepared for the trial. That and my small urge to determine the shape of your room. I suspected a lot more notebooks then I saw. You must be able to shorthand in order to keep what you think to so few notes. But please, it's good to have some sort of conversations and it's not like you or I have anything better to do than to sit and chat, so why not share a word or two with each other?"

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality To be honest, Root hadn't even noticed Taro. At all. If he did, he would've probably turned around and left, not because he was Taro (as Root had lost his previous notes on why he probably wouldn't like the survivor, even if he had an impression he had annoyed him somehow), but because he didn't want anyone to be around when he went somewhere with water, and would see the fear in his eyes. No, he didn't notice Taro at all. The look in his eyes was not annoyance, but fear. However, not even hearing Taro's initial greeting of 'enjoying the view', Root had then turned to look up to see the squid that fascinated him so.
Then Taro spoke again, and Root jumped in shock, as if an animatronic bear or fox had jumped out at him in a cheap jump scare video game, because he'd been awake for two days, as opposed to the one day everyone else had been awake and he was on edge because of it… not that he'd tell anyone that of course. It might make him an even bigger target and he didn't want to die.
Conversation? With him? Root hmphed quietly in response as the words sank deeper into his mind and he realized what his first sentence meant. He'd entered his room? Root looked down at the disaster of a page he'd written about the squid all the words mixing up into each other because he hadn't looked down to see what he was writing as he did. He'd decipher it later. He flipped the page and jotted a note down about Taro entering his room.
"Of course I know short hand." It was a simple statement, though due to the lack of sleep it came out a little more irritable than he was meaning to, even if he was meaning it to sound grumpy in the first place. "I hope you won't bore me. I wonder if that would count as murder, boring me death. Hm. Maybe I should ask the bear sometime. Regardless, what is it you would like to speak about?" He might as well try it out. It might distract him, frustrate him enough to give him enough momentum to stay awake.

"Bore you to death? That'll probably count as suicide as you allowed yourself to be bored. But, if we are to continue this conversation any further, I have a question about your nightstand that struck me as odd. That being, what did you write on said nightstand then cross it out angerly?"
Then Taro realized something about Roots demeanor. Something containing an ounce of confusion.
"I would also like to ask you if you remember anything concerning Daisuke's trial. Because it seems to me that you've forgotten it."

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Damn it. Damn it. He needed his regular journal for this. But no, he had to leave it. He had to leave it behind. God damn it. His heart rate was increasing again with anger at himself. He wanted to slap himself for showing such weakness in front of someone who obviously annoyed him at some point, and was making him angry right now. His angry was being redirected at Taro, even if the anger was at himself. He needed to calm down. He knew he needed to calm down. He needed to just take a deep breath and come up with a good excuse.
But for that he needed time. And he needed to buy time as well. He needed to think of a way to distract Taro momentarily so he could think of a good excuse when it came to Daisuke. He had vague memories of the trial, the ending still stuck in his head, but the rest of it was a blur. He didn't remember specifics anymore. It'd been too much time, even if that death, how Daisuke was split in half by the wire, the blood, the blood… Root closed his eyes as the memory plague his mind once more, the memory of a dream… a dream where Mariko was Daisuke, then back to Daisuke dying once more.
His eyes snapped back open as a good answer to both his questions came to him. After all, he didn't want anyone to know how he forgot things so easily, why he needed so many notebooks, especially not how his mind got that way in the first place. "It was a possible solution to one of my problems. I thought of in the middle of the night. I couldn't find my journal, so I wrote it on my nightstand. The next morning, I awoke and found that my tired mind was stupid and it was not useful at all." Yes. That sounded good. Not at all like he forgot. Even if his voice was a little uneven, but that wasn't from the lie; it was because he was tired. "Of course I remember Daisuke's trial. I remember everything. I remember… his life being slashed away by that wire, the blood… everywhere. It was horrible. How could I forget something like that?"

"Yeah, it was such a tragedy. How could Daisuke strangle Tamashi to death? And, more importantly, did we ever figure out why Daisuke used the sock instead of the rope? It just seems odd..."
Taro pocketed his hands and tilt his head downwards to look at the floor, waiting for the inevitable response he knew was coming.

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Root took another moment to process what Taro said. Hm. Seeing as he wasn't seeing completely clearly, he didn't realize that, in his vast intelligence, Taro could be trying to trick him into showing his weakness, the fact that things faded from his memory so easily, unless of course they were powerful memories, and then he could remember them clearly. The look of pain on her face as he tried to help save her – Stop it. Focus. You have to focus if you want to hide it from him. If you want to hide it from this kid standing in front of you. He had to focus because there was a part of him that never wanted to lose, ever, especially not to Taro.
That made no sense, though. A sock? He remembered pieces of the scene of the crime. Something to do with a neck. But there was blood. And the neck had to do with the calculator. He didn't remember much of Tamashi's body though. He remembered… someone mentioned glass in respect to Tamashi. And a knife. Hm. He needed to piece together his memory, he needed to remember so badly but it was just so hard to remember even those vague bits.
Root laughed and threw his head back as if Taro had said something hilarious, in a slightly delayed reaction. "Tamashi wasn't strangled, you idiot." Maybe he wasn't the only one with memory problems. "Do you have a faulty memory, Taro? Do you need me to remind you?" Shit. Why did he say that? To try to solidify it? But… he couldn't enlighten him. "Well it's too bad for you, Taro. If you don't remember, then you shouldn't want to. It was terrible what happened with Shiro and Tamashi." Ah. Tamashi and a knife. Shiro slit throat. Tamashi must have killed Shio. Then Daisuke killed Tamashi! That made sense with the details he remembered. That had to be it!

"You say that, but you still sound so unsure. I suspect you have memory problems. I also have evidence to prove it, unlike the whole bed sheet shenanigan. You see, while looking around your room I noticed that most of the notebooks acted as sort of a diary. You seem to make general assumptions and cross out anything that you later disagreed upon. For example, your thoughts regarding someone, I wasn't paying attention as to whom, had your general feelings about the party in question crossed out and changed, as if you needed to be reminded that it was no longer applicable. You seem rather attached to your notebook more than a scientist would normally."
Taro smirked. "Don't worry. We all have our faults."

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Root stared at Taro, his mouth slightly open in disbelief. Did he – Root was clenching his notebook a little too tight to the point his knuckles were turning white and he was sure the wood pencil would snap if he didn't release this tension somewhere. He knew he shouldn't be rising like this, but he couldn't help it. The anger was bubbling up way too much. Faults? Faults? That smirk – He was gonna kill him. He was gonna kill him. He was –
Calm down.
He stopped himself and the pressure on his notebook and pencil slowly decreased, releasing the tension and storing it up in his mind, where it was trying to burst out. He wanted to yell. But he stopped himself… at least for now. He couldn't let himself lose control. He couldn't do that, for he knew that Mariko would never forgive him if he killed someone, even if they were infuriating him so much. No, he had to remain calm, and he had to stay logical. Or as logical as he could in these kinds of situations.
"Your assumptions are baseless. Many people keep journals. Usually it’s an… assume feminine practice, but one I like to do, simply because otherwise, feelings… bottle up." God. That was so stupid. But he couldn't think of anything else to say. It was the only thing that occurred to him that didn't involve shouting. And he was trying to remain as civil as possible. "I'm sorry to say you're wrong, Taro. A scientist cannot have a faulty memory, else they lose progress and would never make any advances. Look at my Noble Prize and tell me that again."

Taro imagine a big red button that he pushed, then read a sign saying not to push said button and dropped the issue immediately. He decided to change subjects. But to what, pray tell, that won't get him so hot and bothered...
"So, what's your take on why Daisuke committed murder? He never did state his reasoning besides the obvious and implied to escape motive. I'm referring to what exactly was out there that he felt the need to kill over?"

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Oh thank god. He was stupid enough to accept that (if he remembered any of this later, he'd think of how much of an idiot he was acting like, and how Taro wasn't stupid enough to accept it, but smart enough to drop it at least), and that made Root at least a little bit happy. At least it seemed the conversation was keeping him awake and his mind moving around a lot.
The next question Taro brought up was interesting to him. To Root, it seemed obvious enough, but then again, everyone might not love their family as much as Alexander Root loved his family (well, except his father, but that was a story for another time). No, he was pretty sure that family would drive Daisuke to it. What else was there in life if not the people they loved? The people they grew up with? The people who loved them regardless? Or at least tried to love them. His video was still burned into his memory as well, just like the other powerful memories he had. Oh he hoped she was okay. He hoped that it was all fake, but if it wasn't… well, there was no point to get out anyways, was there? If she was already dead?
"Family, of course. There's not much else it could be. Whatever it was, Daisuke loved more than anything, and I'm sure it was family. What else could it be? Was yours not family?" Of course, from such a statement, his was more obvious, and though irritable and tired, Root was willing to share some information. Stupid… not sleeping.

"No, it wasn't family. It was Junpei, who is, ironically, still asleep since he comatosed. Hopefully, he's still on life support." Junpei was asleep long enough for Taro to hit the acceptance phase of his five stages of grief.
"I assume to see if his family was alright and it is justifiable. But the one thing that strikes me weird is that he didn't explain his reasoning. If it was just his family, why didn't he out and say so?"

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Root scoffed at Taro's answer. To Root it didn't matter if someone wasn't related by blood, if they were dear to you, then they were family. That was how his family ran. It didn't matter race, religion (his dad disagreed, but Root didn't care), affiliation, personality, anything about it. If someone was dear to a member of the family, they were family, and nothing could change that. So in Root's sense, whoever this Junpei was, he was Taro's family. However, it wasn't in Root to just let that information drop without a quip.
"Who is Junpei, your lover?" Haha! That was perfect. A perfect Root quip and he didn't even have to think about it… luckily, or it'd probably end up so very stupid. Of course, he had to act like an asshole because that was his trademark. After all, he didn't want anyone to think he cared about anyone else, or they would be asking him for favors and climbing all over him to be friends. And Root didn't like people. He preferred to be alone. He preferred the solitude where he could think, so he could change the world, so he could discover the answers to the universe.
"Because Taro, some people… don’t' like revealing their feelings, even when it comes to family. If it were me up there, I wouldn't say a thing either. I'm going to die, why hurt everyone there by making them think of you as anything more than a killer? Make them feel bad for the person you are. It'd be easier to hate me, than to miss me." Shit. He was getting a little too deep into the 'actually nice' part of him. He needed to recover this. "Or he could've just been a killer leprechaun who just wanted to kill people." That wasn't good at all. It'd have to do.

"Sorry to ruin your fantasies, but I'm straight. Junpei was an elementary school friend. And as for your reasoning, I doubt that. But hey, we have nothing concrete to run on. Before we change the subject out of the trial, do you have any questions regarding the trial that you would like to ask me?"

[googlefont="Berkshire Swash"] Science is the Poetry of Reality Ha. What would Taro know? After all, Root was being completely logical and sound in his mind and all that he was saying. The lack of sleep was not affecting him whatsoever. Though, throughout the conversation he was jotting down notes on Taro. Such as to make sure to bring Junpei up again and pretend that he's Taro's secret lover or something when he felt like being an asshole. After all, he could be an asshole whenever he wanted to be, because he didn't care what people here thought of him, unless their name was Mariko. And if his name was Mariko, well, Root needed to get his eyes checked.
"About the trial? Hmph." There was one thing that had struck him during this conversation. He could almost hear the whispers of Taro accusing Willow. Voting for… was it Saoirse? Hmph. It was probably just his stupidity, but Root considered it for a moment. "Did your mother drop you on your head when you were a baby? Why the hell did you vote for Saoirse? Why were you…. Insisting on Willow as the killer?"
None of it made sense to Root even when he was at his peak. Then again, his understanding of people was limited. He could understand String Theory, or Advanced Quantum Mechanics, or the intricate structure of the human brain, but people was his biggest failing in life. He didn't understand other people very well, he couldn’t read people, he couldn't understand others unless it were explained to him. He couldn't infer someone's life just by how they acted… Then again, Root didn't care, as they all seemed to be idiots when compared to him, so stupid and insignificant. There were very few who stood out from the rest. Mariko, his mother, his sister, his father, even, Adrianna, Willow…
