Willow had encountered his fair share of people who had lost the majority or all of the people they loved. None of them acted quite like Taro. Some of them were wrecks with massive survivors guilt. Others had fallen completely into a role, Surgeon or Soldier or Artist and lost themselves to it. Still others blamed God, or rejected his existence or on the opposite end devoted themselves to religion and spirituality. Some could barely take care of themselves and some were master caretakers and among the most kind and generous people he had met.
None of the extremism of their lives fit Taro. He was some normal punk kid still, as if it all passed him by without effecting him. Maturity wise he was atrophied, that was just about the only sign that something had been wrong with the survivor's life. It was a bit odd. Taro seemed to be entirely outside Willow's ability to profile, which was disorienting.
"You know I was on a forum one day. This was about when I was 8. Specifically it was a sub-fora of an Occult forum dedicated to curses and curse removals. We had a kid come in one day, and this was a japanese kid on a predominantly English speaking forum right and I had yet to start studying Japanese so we had to have one of our Japanese speaking members, Ascendent Lord of Ice translate. He told us about this curse he had placed on him. And I was thinking at first, "this should be good, last time I heard about a Japanese curse it was from Ascendent and he told us about how if people touch him they die." However the curse was a lot more difficult to wrap my head around with at the time. Sometimes I still grapple with it. I printed it out and read it a few times over the years so basically this is how things went." Willow began.
"He first opened up his message by greeting us and apologizing for wasting our time with his utterly pathetic life story. However he said it may be of some interest to us as he appeared to be burdened with the curse of an "unstable power". His post went on to state that he was in a "luck cycle" wherein bad luck lead to good luck and good luck lead to bad luck. Whatever luck he had, luck of the opposite persuasion would appear equal to his previous fortune. Most of us were pretty confused and curious, so he gave us some examples. Many of them were pretty minor but one major example were events that lead to his parents death. In the end he was the lone survivor of the plane crash that killed his parents and in exchange for their deaths he received freedom and a fortune. This was apparently the incident that inspired him to write this post. "Willow said. This was all reminding him of being home and he was getting a bit nostalgic.
"Ascendent later asked him if he wanted the curse removed in a way that scared him off and we never saw him again. I guess my point in telling the story is simply this. While survival in certain environments may be a skill, and you likely possess many of those skills, I believe that you posses a certain distinct couple of properties. A shield of good luck around you, like a buble, it ensures that you live through disasters, accidents and tragedies. However this draws bad luck around you like a magnet, harming those around you. If you are not the mastermind, it may very well be those properties that have caused this killing game to occur without your will. " Willow proposed.
He didn't entirely believe this hypothesis. Even if Taro did have such luck, the organization would probably still have their reasons to target Hope's peak students, though perhaps it wouldn't have been this batch of students or they would have backed off from such a powerful and risky target. Though judging by this groups apparent power...they might not have had much to fear from Hope's Peak. A scary thought...yet here they were.
