For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Yes! He had finally done it! Root was grinning from ear to ear, as he looked down at the camera in front of him.
"Testing, testing, this is Alexander Root. I'm making sure this works." He was grinning as he moved into frame with a big grin on his face. "Oh this is looking so good. If you're watching this, it means I forgot to erase this. See? I knew I could do it. With science, anything is possible." He gave the camera a thumbs up and moved behind the camera again.
Oh it was magnificent. He had perfected it. There was no way anyone could ever tell the difference between this camera and one made elsewhere. Other than the couple of upgrades and his own touches he put on the design (it wasn't a unique design really, seeing as he wasn't that creative when it came to things like that). He had etched onto one side, 'Made by A. Root' and then on the other side 'Confidence' because that was what this would be for Mariko, just like she had said in the Supply Store when he first made his promise.
He set up the day. He had slipped a note under Mariko's door this morning that requested her presence in the Theater, with a warning to bring a weapon for protection, just in case. He didn't want to scare her, but he also didn't want her to die on her way to see him in the theater. He thought it was the most apt place for presenting her with his present.
After practically skipping to the theater that morning, Root hid the camera in a place not viewable when someone first comes in, but would be easy for him to access. He had picked a movie that ended sadly, in order to avoid those that Monokuma had edited, as he was pretty sure that she would not like that. And, of course, he had taken an armful of sandwiches, some water and a few apples, just in case either of them got hungry. Well, mostly if she got hungry, because he wasn't really one to eat much. Either way, he… was taking Willow's advice, advice he didn't remember Willow giving, but he had written it down afterwards apparently, and he remembered their hug in the aquarium. The moment had been sweet, and he… well because of that, he hoped that perhaps Mariko actually could feel the same as he did, even if she didn't right now. He'd prepared a speech that he may or may not have to give, depending on her reaction. He set up the food in a small sort of display, and sat down in one of the seats waiting for Mariko to arrive, nearly shaking due to his nerves and doubt.

[/font] her friend here had always struck her more of the type to stay stuck up in his room with a few dozen good books because movies would have required him to interact with members of the general public but she tried not to judge him too harshly for it. "What's the special occasion?"[/ul]

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. You know what was one of the things being obsessive and focused on a single thing caused? Not noticing when someone was trying to hide something, such as bruises, or something that would cause him to get angry at whoever caused such marks. However, he was focused on the single goal of giving Mariko the video camera he had worked so hard in order to create for her. It was incredibly difficult, seeing as he couldn't just easily put things together like an inventor would be able to, but in the end he found a way to get her this camera, and it was fantastic. It was almost as if he didn't even make it, save for the obvious design quirks and the couples of upgrades he'd installed to help the camera work even better. Thanks to the supplies he had found from around Monoworld, and the tools he used to build it from the hobby shop, Root had finally finished his project and nothing was distracting him from giving it to the one person he struggled to create it for: the girl he loved.
Of course, outside of Monoworld his sister could still be alive, but right now Root had to live here, and he could do nothing to help his sister. All he could do was hope that she was alright and that their father was taking care of her like he always had. For now, the only real feeling of love he could really allow himself to dwell upon was the strong feelings that had built from the very beginning, from when she first introduced herself. It was odd how such strong feelings could manifest themselves in him in a somewhat short amount of time. Then again, his mom would tell him that was how it was when she met his father, something about 'sometimes when you see a person, you just know'.
Root quickly jumped up from the seat he had sat in to wait for Mariko and smiled widely at her. "I think you'll like the occasion," was his answer. Unable to wait anymore, he picked up the hidden camera, though the suspense was short, he made sure that he moved slow enough it didn't seem like he was reaching for something to quickly kill her with (what sort of impression would that give to this girl he cared for; no, he rather make sure it was safe even though he was more than a little excited). Revealing the thing he worked so long on to try to build, Root was grinning from ear to ear. "I told you I would build you a camera. You'll find that it'll store a ton of footage, and I even was able to get a feature in there where you can invert colors. It'll record sound and everything… I'm sorry it's not better, and I can continue to work on it and make it better if you want. I… was just so excited that it… works." He held the video camera out to Mariko, though his eyes didn't leave her.

[/i] Apparently someone didn’t care much for dramatic flair as Alexander wasted no time reaching for something he had hidden before she got here (again, something that the tiny voice in her head had warned her to be wary of if it had been anybody else of with her alone but she dismissed as dumb since it was Alexander here with her after all but anything she may want to say dies on her tongue as the proud scientist revealed what it was he had hidden from from, the reason she had been called out in the first place. In his hands was something was a handheld video camera and it was a thing of beauty. To her, maybe other people saw it differently but when you’re not sure if you’re ever gonna see something the small things become important. "[...]I'm sorry it's not better, and I can continue to work on it and make it better if you want. I… was just so excited that it… works."“What..when did..how...” She was so flustered she couldn’t even complete a full sentence at the moment. Brushing the hood away from her face bruises be damned, Mariko made her way down to where Alexander stood and never took her eyes off of the beautiful machine that he held in his hands, running a finger over the engravings he had put into the side, specifically the word "confidence” He had remembered all of this time somehow, despite everything else that had happened around them, all the death and all the tragedy he had still spent free time trying to put together a stupid camera for her. This was clearly a time where she should react calmly and with grace. ...Hahaha, just kidding. Without so much as a warning Mariko found herself throwing herself at the the scientist (literally) as she wrapped her arms around the boy and gave him a tight embrace that was similar to the one they shared in the aquarium but this time she hoped to way less body parts being discovered floating in a tank. God, he was too good to her at times and it made her feel guilty she didn’t have any real way to repay him and make him happy the way he was always making her feel. But she was too happy to dwell on that at the moment, too busy pinching herself to make sure this wasn’t a dream. "You're the greatest ever Alex. How did you even get the time to put this together?~ You're the best."She wanted to touch it, hold it, play with it. Film with it. It was she was a little girl on Christmas morning all over again and she woke up to the biggest loot pile under the tree. [/ul]

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. His face was starting to hurt from smiling so much. He hadn't smiled this widely and with so much happiness and excitement in his heart since, well shortly before his mom died and he was getting his experiment ready which he was positive was going to work. However, this time, instead of his happiness being rewarded with a dead mom, the girl he loved more than anything else in the world at this moment wrapped her arms around him, causing him to stumble slightly, though he kept his balance. Without a second thought, he wrapped his arms around her, savoring the moment. All his work had paid off. She was happy despite everything. And this was worth all the trouble he went through to get her this camera.
"I've been working on it ever since I told you I would build you one. After the… lack of sleep… well, a week off from a project really allows one's subconscious to work on it. It was… important after all. I couldn't just forget about it, like I do many things," Root replied with an uplifting, happy tone to his voice, a warm laugh stemmed not from something funny, but the feelings that were welling up inside him seeing her strong reaction to his gift. He knew he was a complete goner, but he was accepting that fact and allowing himself to accept the feelings he felt though he didn't understand them at all. Why was it her smile was so intoxicating? How was her mere presence enough to melt his heart (not literally of course, because then he would be dead) and make him a kinder person? Even while it was hard to just let things go unexplained, he was attempting to just let allow it right now. And that was a big step for Alexander Root.
"I finished it yesterday. After I figure out how to create the photocell and store a video using the supplies I had, it was simple. The lenses were - " He stopped, having a feeling she probably didn't want all of the details on just how he finished the camera. "Anyways, it was important to you, and so it was important to me… because you're important to me, Mariko."

[/i] Awwwwww. Who would have guessed at the beginning of all of this that they would A: Still be alive this long (mariko would have bet against her surviving as long as she had truth me told. She had a weak heart when it came to this kind of scenario) and B: that there would be a scene set between two people just like this. It was straight out of a roman....never mind. out of a certain movie genre. He didn't...he couldn't, could he? In a place like this it just seemed so impracticable, so improbable and yet there was a tiny glimmer of hope that just refused to go away in the knot of her stomach whenever she and Alex were alone now and she didn’t know what to do to rectify it. She hadn’t experienced this for herself before. "You...important to me too." Subtly at its finest folks. Sweeping green hair away from her eyes and bruises, Mariko took a second to try and figure out a way to say all of this without seeming stupid "I meant what I said, you know. At the aquarium. Nothing against ev...almost everyone else, but you're really the only person who I'm close to. Who I need by me." She had her friends here, sure. Willow seemed to be okay and the few times that she had spoken to Ignia she had seemed nice enough, and Alexia was okay. but with Alex it was different, it was different in all the ways she was used to directing happen but never really experiencing herself. For that reason the green haired girl paused and cast her eyes skyward as if she was seeking guidance from the heavens above "How do I say this properly..."

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. "I love you."
It was one of the only things he was sure about when it came to his current feelings. He loved her, with all his heart. He was so distracted in this moment that it was a miracle that he could even see anything besides her pristine face. His mind hadn't computed the blemishes on her face, at least not yet, being caught up in the moment. Everything she was saying… it was giving him confidence to say those three words. His emotions hid what he should be plainly seeing on her face. For the instant his mind cooled down from the heightened concoction of emotion all running through his mind at once. Love. Happiness. Excitement. Hope. Fear. Nervousness. Nausea built up as though he was going to throw up from the drugs his brain was releasing, adrenaline, endorphins, dopamine, and various other drugs. Yet, he didn't care.
"I… You don't have to say it back," Root said quickly, "I don't want you to think you have to say that to me. But I had to get it off my chest. Don't say it… unless you really feel it. Not because of the camera, or because of the moment or because you want me to feel better. But… that's how I feel. You make me want to be a better person, to be nice to other people. You… bring out the best in me. You can make me smile no matter what is happening. You're… the light in my life that casts out darkness." Okay, that last one was a line from one of his mom's books. How he remembered it was because it was his favorite memory of his mother was of her reading that book to him and his sister. A little bit Oedipin, but whatever. It wasn't like she would know that. "I love you, Mariko. I love you so much. I can't bear to think of a life without you. And… and I'm sorry if this makes you feel awkward… If you want to just be friends… that's… that's fine." then I'll live with it, even if it would pain me to do so.

[/i]...Oh, so that's how you say that. That wasn't what she had expected to hear. She had never really had a lot of experience with kids her own age, being a director she was always being shuttled off to one new set after another for movies so she's never really been given a lot of free time to get no know people. To get close, forge good friendships, to fall in love with someone or even have someone fall in love with her so those three simple words from Alexander had caught her completely off guard and she found herself trying to untwist her tongue so she could tell Alexander the truth. He deserved that much. "The more I think about it the more I think that maybe it's stupid. To think like this." She was struggling to find the right words in her mind, still shaken by what he had said moments before. She'd never been confessed to , and even in the movies she did she tried often not to make romance films just because it wasn’t anything she had experienced before but she had to say this all, everything that was in her mind everything that had been building up in her chest since that first day at the fountain when they spoke for the first time, she just needed to find the right words for it all. "This place is a deathtrap. We're dropping like flies left and right, the bear wants our heads on pikes and Taro's out there pistal whipping people like its going out of style. We could die any day because somebody just decided they want to go home."All true, none of that could be disputed. Mariko gives a short sigh and pushes away from Alex slightly just so she was looking him straight in the face as she says the most important part of all of this nonsense, something that was probably obvious to everyone but the two of them until pretty much sixty seconds ago when he had said it first "But I can't help it, I love you Alexander. From the moment we woke up at the fountain, selfish as it may be I've been in love with you."[/ul]

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. The whole time she spoke, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest so loudly that it felt like she could hear it, even if logically he knew a heart couldn't pound loud enough for someone at her height and distance could really heart he fluttering beat of the organ that gave life. It was curious how her presence could not only affect his mind and his emotions but also how his body reacted. He knew it was the chemicals his brain produced, flowing through his blood stream to every part of his body, making him physically feel this way. Much like when a lover would die, someone could literally die from heart break, because the brain would give up. But this was the opposite.
But then she said it. Root looked at her with a look of… well he wasn't sure how to describe it. He looks happy, surprised, in love, completely and totally taken by her words and her eyes. His mind tried to connect the 'Taro's out there pistol whipping people' to everything else. The world they were in now was a dark place. But somehow, in it all, they had found love together, happiness. He couldn't let anyone snuff out her flame, else he would lose all the warmth he had gained.
"Mariko…" Root muttered as he looked at her for a moment. He reached out to her, placing his hand on her cheek, and lowered himself down to her, to press his lips against hers, a gentle caress. The connection lasted for several moments, as he savored her taste, the feeling that jolted into his mind. The extra drugs made his brain fire on all frequencies, all focused on his lips against hers, the confession she had just made seizing him. Finally, when he pulled away, he took a few deep breaths to regularize his breathing.
"Screw the bear. Screw Taro," Root said still slightly breathless, "I'll… I'll protect you. No matter what happens, I'll be there. I'll protect you from this world, from this game. I'll save you from this world we're forced to live in right now. I-I can't say I'll do anything. I-I can't kill, I'm too afraid of getting caught. I-I don't want to die. But if you want me to. If you tell me to, I will. I'll do it for you, to get us both out of here. There might not any other chance."

[/i] "I would never." Why would he even say that? Taking one of his hands in hers and giving it a small squeeze to reassure him of what she was saying, Mariko craned her head up so she was looking up at the taller boy who could really kill a moment when he put his mind to it. “We promised in the aquarium, remember? That we’d never let them break us. Monokuma, Taro, the park whatever it is. I love you Alexander and I want you alive and here with me for as long as possible until they day we finally figure a way out of here and probably even longer after that.”All of this talk of dying was really going to kill the mood here. Sheesh. [/ul]

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. She wasn't - she didn't - she'd let him… It was hard to believe, really and truly that anyone could love him. Yet, when he kissed her, she didn't retreat, but she - his thoughts weren't connecting, he couldn't think a full thought before it changed, fragmenting his entire thought process. While to others his notes might seem fragmented, but at least in his head he could make sense of it all, though there were times he stumbled too fast forward in his thoughts.
"I had a feeling… that… that you wouldn't want me to… attempt it," Root said looking down at her, feeling her hand in his, the warmth, the comfort such a simple touch brought to him. He smiled once more. "Don't worry, I'll find a way for us both to make it out of here. I won't… let this game win against us." However, slowly his mind began to focus in on everything that was around him. They were in the theater. In Monoworld. Right. That was the world they were stuck in now. And he had to try to beat it, for her, and a man motivated by love was the most motivated of all. He wouldn't give up hope. He would save her no matter the cost. He would save her from this game. He would do whatever it took to keep her happy.
And that's when his eyes focused in on the blemishes on her face, on her throat. A look of worry passed over his face before anger mixed with the worry and he ran a hand over one of her bruises. "Who did this to you?" It was Taro. He wanted to see her. This is what he did to her. That had to be it. But he thought she wouldn't have met with him. What was she thinking? What was he thinking for not being there for her? He'd failed her again, over and over. How could she love a man who kept failing her? He failed to protect her and he was failing again to even notice it. How could he have missed that? He cursed himself, he beat himself up on the inside, he told himself he couldn't let it happen again. He needed to be there. He needed to live up to his promises, otherwise, he would fail her again, and this time she might not live through it. And he could never forgive himself if he allowed her to die. "It was Taro, wasn't it? Something needs to be done about that… traitor. Don't go near him, alright? I'll… I'll find a way to take care of him. So he won't do this to you again."

[/i] Oh. Right. In all of the excitement of what had just happened Mariko had actually forgotten about the pain in her face and how Root had told her not to go to meet Taro under any circumstances. In her defense she hadn't actually planned on meet with the survivor so maybe he would be understanding for a change? A girl can dream can't she? "He kinda cornered me in the church. Things happened..." That was putting it mildly, but he really didn't need to hear about the whole "almost strangled to death and had an eye almost burnt out" thing. "He didn't take it well when I couldn't answer his dumb questions."On the bright side, her sisters always had said scars were sexy. Then again they had usually meant on guys, she wasn't sure if it worked the same way for girls "Something needs to be done about that… traitor. Don't go near him, alright? I'll… I'll find a way to take care of him.""Don't. Don't go near him." Taro hadn't made a whole lot of sense when he had decided to torture her in the first place but even she understood "murder weapon" thank you very much. Taro was up to something and there was no possible way she was going to let Alexander rush straight into that noise. "He's...he's planning something. He said he had smuggled in some sort of weapon to make you break, and you just can't go near him. Okay?
Would someone listen to her for a change? That would be a nice change of pace[/ul]

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. It was just like his dream. Just like the stupid hallucination when he had talked to Ignia. He was such a fool. He spent too much time devoted to his work, or to time spent away from her, that such a thing could have happened. How had he not noticed her injuries? He was beating himself up on the inside, though he wanted to give off a more confident exterior than the hatred he was feeling for himself. How the hell could she love someone like him who didn't even notice… who didn't... He felt so powerless to prevent these things from happening, he had to step it up. He had to protect her more, he had to make sure that… that she was safe. Yet he lacked the power to control anything. He couldn't do anything to make certain that she would be fine.
All he was good at was science, and his projects. One project was done at least. He only had two more. And those two were just as important as the others. He'd find time to figure out the issues he was having… but with Project Allison, he was so close, one last little issue left before he figured it all out, he knew it. The ideas were flowing in as if he had already thought of them, and then he, for some reason, hit a block like he reached the end of such memories, but he was so very close. So very close, and he could almost taste it and then nothing would matter, and he could change everything.
Root bit his lower lip and looked to the side for a moment. He thought for a few moments on whether or not he should do what she said. If he just let Taro go, then… but if he really was trying to break him or whatever, he couldn't let him affect him so much. He slowly looked back at Mariko. "Fine. You don't have to worry about me and Taro. I won't let him break me." He smiled at her as he gently moved a bit of hair behind her ear. "I can stand whatever he throws at me. No matter what happens, no matter what he does, as long as you're by my side, there's nothing he could ever do to break me."
