The Monty Hall of Memories!!
The looks of pain and disapproval were apparent on every student’s face. But Root couldn’t look at them, not...not anymore. He barely even made a noise as the foreboding vent shifted above his head, quickly and painfully shooting him upward and around several metal tubes that battered his body. Eventually, the painful darkness ended...as Alexander was dropped into a plain white room, adorned with nothing less than three colored doors with three statements on them, and a question on the ceiling.
“What is 2+2?”
What the hell? Why was this so easy? Nevertheless, the scientist walked through the door labelled “4” boldly, slamming it behind him. Another white room, identical to the last.
“What is your sister’s name?”
Well, it certainly wasn’t Harold, as one door proclaimed. Nor Gwenevieve. Yes, it was the blue one marked “Wendy”. But as he entered that door, her name plagued him. Where was Wendy? Was she okay? Was she...alive? Could she even be stuck in a sadistic game such as Monoworld? He closed that door more gingerly as he met with an identical room. She deserved gentleness.
“What is the quadratic equation?”
Right. The quadratic equation. Um...oh god. He felt the synapses in his mind quivering with antici….pation. Was it y=mx+b? Or...a+x=c? No. Wait. ax^2+bx+c=0. That had to be it. He contemplated for a minute, but ultimately strolled through with a panicked heart. Correct. Thankfully.
This went on, over and over and over. The questions stayed at this level for quite some time, and every student in the court watched apprehensively as Alexander navigated the maze. He would contemplate for what felt like forever, then enter the correct door.
“Calculate the average frequency of a harmonic oscillator with a spring constant of .3 when a force of 34 N pulls down the spring holding a 3kg mass."
Oh, for fuck’s sake. Really? The doors were marked with random numbers with a million decimals and Root had no idea which would mark the end. Finally, he just...picked one at random. He expected a buzzsaw that would saw through his brain and leave information spilling across the floor like crimson water. Or perhaps a electrical shock that would fix his brain and stop his heart, in some ironic twist. Perhaps a cloth Mariko puppet would slowly and softly bludgeon him to death. The possibilities were endless, really.
What Root didn’t expect was another fucking room. What could the question be this time? Something else he’d have to guess? Luck was running out for the scientist. But he surely...couldn’t expect this question.
“Whose fault is your mother’s death, Alex?”
Root didn’t hesitate, because only one door was in the room. Blinking back tears and an unquenchable anger, he stormed through the door that read “Alexander Root.” To...find himself in another room.
“Where are you going, Alex? ”
Back to the standard format. Heaven. Hell. Outside? Well, the other two doors might as well have been locked. It was obvious to the culprit where he was going after his sins crawled over his skin and blackened him. Hell. Hell hell hell hellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhellhe--
There was no next room. Just a bomb that said “WRONG!” In big, red letters. And then a blinding explosion that sent him flying into the air. And when he regained some bit of consciousness, a few things were apparent to the culprit and the viewing students. He was in a desolate wasteland of craters and ruins. The building had collapsed completely. And a few yards away, his mother’s body lay pinned underneath the collapsed ceiling. He had to get to her. Perhaps time had...reversed, and this was his chance to save her! So he dragged his now paralyzed legs toward the woman, and after what felt like an eternity, reached her.
“Alex, sweetie...you came…” The broken, mechanical voice came from the woman. And then repeated. “You came...you came...you came...oh, Alex, you shouldn’t have, sweetie...no, really…”
She lifted her head, revealing Monokuma’s signature face with a glowing red eye.
“You shouldn’t have.”
The room shook as the faux-mother exploded, and Alexander Root, the SHSL Scientist, was no more.
