03. Little Tokyo
Welcome!
The hustle and bustle of Little London is matched and overcome only by Sector III: Little Tokyo. Upon arriving, the shuttle opens into an airlock with a specific designated exit and entrance. Due to heavy commuting traffic, it keeps people from becoming stuck or trampled in rush hours. Yes, these people will trample you--are you the next Einstein? Probably not! Therefore, you’re not of much use to the citizens of Little Tokyo. In fact, it’s widely known that other sectors all harbor a certain percentage of III-born citizens who did not meet standard for Little Tokyo, and had their citizenship revoked. On the flip-side, exceptionally bright students throughout the New World Order are singled out and sent to Little Tokyo, where they live under volunteer parents and work with the local engineers to continue to innovate and inspire. Truly, these people could create an entirely STEM-based Hope’s Peak, if they so desired.
Despite the fixation on function, Sector III is breathtaking. If you’ve visited Sector I before, the skyscrapers may feel familiar, but it’s easy to forget about them thanks to the building-wide LED displays on them. Some display basic designs such as twirling DNA helix models, but others feature advertisements for conglomerates and Future Foundation-sponsored events and groups. While beautiful...it’s a little hard to find the entrance to these buildings! They’re plain black doors, devoid of any design as to not distract from the screens. If you find one between the tightly-clustered groups of buildings, entering shows a perfectly engineered system to go through the building in question as fast as possible. Each area has been uniquely twisted to increase efficiency of its purpose. Each floor is open to the public, but...when you enter floors where scientists and engineers are working, you’ll notice that even when you speak, there is no sound. Interesting...how that works seems to be a mystery, but nothing is impossible with the new technology being created every day.
This new technology is prevalent in the streets, as well. AIs and other robots are sent into the sector’s public spaces often to test their functionality, and you may encounter several AIs without ever knowing. Besides that, drones fly through the streets at breakneck speeds to deliver packages or meals around the area. The streets are devoid of cars; people tend to whiz by on segways, scooters, or various other modes of singular transportation. Nevertheless, traffic control devices are installed and strictly enforced. Going against them could prove lethal! While the sky seems perpetually overcast and gray, the streets glow in various neon pinks and blues as the LED displays light the city. When it rains, the displays are all turned off; a visitor most likely would question whether this was to protect the screens, or done as a cultural display.
The people of Little Tokyo are incredibly focused, driven people. They are born with goals. They are raised toward these goals, and they will live to complete these goals. They won’t be outright cruel to anyone, but nothing will stand in their way. They’re steadfast people, and the New World Order relies heavily on what they accomplish day-to-day. Someday, they may find a way to keep everyone living comfortably--could they reverse the radiation battering the haven’s shield with every passing day? Only time will tell.
For such logical people, they have an odd obsession with fashion. Trends quickly find their way from Sector IX: Little Paris to Little Tokyo, where they are replicated and even sometimes elevated by the citizens. It’s not uncommon to see some very stylish, unconventional outfits fashioned by the people here. For them, perhaps it’s a nice outlet away from all the machinery.
Regardless, welcome to Sector III: Little Tokyo. Do what you can, or get out of the way.
