After getting through introductions, I met up with Kris again. We agreed to do some exploring of the manor, now that we've made it onto the show. However, someone else overheard us and asked to come with us. If I'm not wrong, her name was Dorothy Saotome, the Aspiring Ultimate Polyglot. She asked if we could visit the dining room first. I didn't want to look rude and say no, and I'm sure Kris just wanted to get to know the others, or maybe he's already sick of talking to me. Either way, we met up in the dining room.
"I'm g-glad to see you guys b-both made it in! I thought for sure I w-wasn't going to make it in! O-Once Orica was called, I g-gave up."
If I never have to live through suspense like that again, it'll be too soon. Of course I had to be called last. Well, what's done is done. I still made it in, so I guess it doesn't matter.
"So, h-how are you guys f-feeling now that you've made it in?"

Dorothy was still sort of trembling with excitement over the fact that she got in. She was sure that after everything is over, she'll be one of the lucky 10 students to become a real Ultimate, just like her family.
She decided to approach Liam, because the Polyglot figured that he was a nice dude.
Dorothy shook her head after the AU Knight said that he had given up just because the monster of a woman, Orica, was called on stage before him.
"Come, have a little faith in yourself, man!", she said to him. "A defeatist attitude like that won't allow you to grasp your title, you know? So come on, think more positively!"
When she was asked how she was feeling, she grinned at him.
"I'm feeling great! Now I can be like the rest of my super talented family!"
She sat down on a chair and looked around.
"This place is gaudy, isn't it? I wonder how much everythimg has costed..."

Kris soon ran up to the group. You've noticed he has a thin box of some sort under his left arm. Upon entering, she noticed Dorothy and Liam standing next to her. Eh, it was not fitting for a driver to finish last, but he had reasons.
"Sorry, guys! I did some exploring on my way here already, and looked into one of the...Wow. That's one expensive-looking place, isn't it? Look at that chandelier!"
He sat next to Dorothy, and started swinging on his chair.
"So, anything I missed? You seem to be in great moods, so no fight yet, I presume?" Krzysztof winked at the other two. Somehow, he did not think those two would fight anyone, let alone each other.

"Yeah, y-you got a point. Sitting around moping all day isn't going to help m-my odds, and I really don't want the others' pity. I kinda had a similar talk with Kris backstage. N-Not that yours wasn't great either! Sorry."
Alright, she's nice. I can probably consider her a friend for now. So that's what? Two or three now? There's Kris, who seems like an overall nice guy, Nox, who seemed a bit carefree, not that it's a bad thing or anything like that, and now Dorothy. I've already made more 'genuine' friends in here than outside the manor. I'm sure he's proud of me.
"So y-your family has a few Ultimates in it? That's neat!"
Wow, just met her and she and her family already seem a lot more talented than me or the rest of my family. Did the producers make the right choice when they accepted me? Surely a cognitive psychologist must be better than a second knight. How did I even manage to make it in? Well, I'm here now, so I'll have to make the best of this.
"I never even considered how m-much this place must have cost. They must have some real f-faith in us Ultimates-"
Suddenly, Kris walked in, carrying a box of... something.
"Oh! Hey Kris! You haven't m-missed much. No fight yet! But yeah, this place is huge. So, what's in that box?"

"This..." Kris put the box on the table and opened it, revealing a 10x10 checkerboard and a bunch of game pieces. "Is an international checkers set. Always played those back home. Found it back in one of those closets in the foyer hall. The other one was locked for some reason... Hmmm..."
Kris closed the box and looked at the chandelier once again. It was very peculiar. Every candle's flame was a different color. Very, very interesting. OK, let's get back to talking, let's ask Liam and Dorothy something.
"So, any plans for the game now that you two have got in? I wander what challenges will await us."
Yeah, that's a nice topic. Sure would allow to hammer in the fact that we all have got in. We all got past the most difficult step. It's all gonna be easy from there, isn't it? The excitement for the competition was killing Kris.

Dorothy nodded.
"Yeah, my family has quite a few interesting talents! My mom for example used to be the Ultimate Model, my dad was the Ultimate Comedian."
Upon saying the second talent's name, she immediately thought of the history books and a certain person's name.
Embarrassed slightly, she shook her hands in a dismissive manner.
"Before you think it, no, Iocus Hilares is not my father!", she assured her new friends.
Scratching the side of her face, she switched the subject back.
"If you want to know more about my family, just ask!", she said.
The box Krzysztof brought along piqued Dorothy's interest. The checkers game looks fun and she'd love to play against the Knight and Stunt Driver.
"Would someone like to play checkers with me?", she asked the two young men.
..."Oh, right. Challenges we're gonna have to do? Hmm, I can think of quizzes and tests of physical fitness. Maybe we're gonna have to show off our talent as well.", she shrugged. "I dunno, let's get surprised, then."

"A checkerboard? That's cool! But w-why would the other closet be locked? I thought this place was all f-for us to explore?"
This manor was made for us, right? Then why would they lock off certain parts of it from us? What are they hiding from us? What else is locked away?
"Plans for the game? I guess my plan is to win, but I'd also like to m-make some friends along the way. I'm glad to see I'm already making progress with that goal."
Let's just hope you don't drive all of your friends away before this is over.
"Now that you m-mention it, I am starting to wonder what kind of ordeals they'll put us through. There'll probably be challenges suited to all the different contestants, seeing as this is all to help us improve ourselves."
I wonder what a challenge suited to me would be like. Kris's challenge would probably be something driving related, but I don't think there are any cars in the manor. Dorothy's challenge would be definitely be something language related. Mine would probably be something related to sword-fighting.
"Here's hoping we can all make it to the end of the competition w-without anything bad happening."
What's the worst that could happen? This is all televised, right? Anything that goes wrong will be on TV for all to see, so it should be safe here. Yeah. Just gotta stop worrying.
"Have either of you guys seen w-where we're sleeping yet? They had to have prepared rooms or something for us, right? I hope they're not making us sleep on a couch or something."

Why would it be locked? Well, that caught Kris off-guard. It’s not something he thought about when exploring. Shit, you better have a quick explanation for that. You can’t look stupid.
“Uhh…Maybe the key to there is hidden in some secret spot to search for? Yeah, it is a reality TV show after all. It’d make sense to hide some useful stuff for people to look for.” Brilliant explanation, Krzysztof. That’s a perfect explanation. Yeah.
“Of course we’ll all make it.” He said after Liam brought up something bad happening. There was nothing to worry about, right? The killing game era was pretty much over. “As for the sleeping area…I have not seen much of the manor yet. I’ve no idea at all. Though, the Living Room couches are very nice to sit in, I wouldn’t mind sleeping in one” This, this reminded Kris of this one time he was given his car. He was so stoked at the concept of owning it, he actually slept in the driver’s seat for a night. His back ached the next day, but you know what, it was worth it.
He then realized that made him homesick. He began playing with his car keys, one of the things he brought from his home. Those allowed him to feel like at home. You know, there’s one more thing that did that. He turned towards Dorothy.
“Let’s play.” He began setting up the board, and the pieces. In the process of doing so, he was talking. “Huh. The Ultimate Family. Nice. My dad is a mechanic. Used to fix cars for a living before the Tragedy. Now he’s maintaining the productions machines in Lil’ Hong Kong.”

Dorothy smiled kindly at Liam. So far from what he said, he didn't deserve to be a target of her scathing sarcasm at the moment.
"Don't worry, Liam.", she said. "There's no way anything bad will happen here. This is all on TV, and I'm sure a major scandal is the last thing the production company needs. The worst thing that can happen is that you won't make it into Neo Hope's Peak Academy."
She put a finger on her chin and began to think. "Although, I'm curious... How can only 10 people be accepted into the school when the old Hope's Peak had around 16 students in a class? I mean, I wasn't around before the Tragedy struck, so what I know, I have from my mom. Maybe they're going to do this competition twice to get a full class of new Ultimates?"
She sighed, but she sounded content when doing so. "Although it's just a dream to me, I still like it."
Dorothy then pointed upwards from where she sat. "Our dorms are directly above us. I've been exploring the place for a bit and went up the stairs. There are four hallways each with five rooms. My room has a balcony, so I'm sure you guys have one, too! I haven't taken a long enough look at my bed yet, so I don't know how soft the bed is or how well I can sleep in there."
She then commented on what Krzysztof said about the locked closet he had found. "My guess is that the equipment used for special effects is hidden in there. Exploring the area is fine for us, but there are places after all that we shouldn't get into, just to keep the show's 'magic' alive, you know? It wouldn't be any fun for the audience to see just what exactly goes on behind the cameras."
Then she saw that the Stunt Driver already had prepared the game. She turned towards Krzysztof and looked at him.
"Okay, let's play. I'll let you make the first move, okay?"

"You're right, I should keep my f-focus on the academy. M-Making sure I get there should be my top priority."
What's the worst that could happen? The only thing to worry about is Neo Hope's Peak. I just have to make sure I can get to the end of the show.
"I think they're trying to get a best-of-the-best class, and t-that's why there's only going to be ten people moving forward. We're supposed to be the hope for the f-future, right?"
I wonder who'll be fortunate enough to make it in? We're all talented in our own ways. Maybe it'll come down to whoever has worked on their talent the most?
"We have our own rooms? T-That's good. I was hoping we weren't all going to share a room. Not that I don't want to be around you guys! Sorry. It's just nice to have our own rooms. A place where we can relax, and have some time to yourself."
At least at night I'll be able to have some time to think about all this. Getting onto the show, meeting all these new people, exploring the manor, it's all so much to take in.
"Yeah, I guess they're probably keeping something important in there, or maybe it's like Kris says. M-Maybe there's a key hidden somewhere around here that's part of the challenges."
"I'll watch over the game, so neither of you guys cheat. Not that I think you guys are cheaters or anything! Sorry."
I never saw Kris as the kind of guy to play board games. I guess you learn something new everyday.

“Balconies, huh.” That meant Kris could wake up, and just go outside and breathe in some air and not get sick. That was not the luxury he ever experienced, as evidenced by the gas mask in his pocket. Moreover, the air here was actually fresh and pleasant to breathe. “It’s gonna be amazing. Waking up to no smog and all.”
He turned back to Liam, whose stuttering got more intense when the topic shifted to making it into the academy. “Don’t worry about that, we’ll work together making sure you’ll get through. You know what they say, right? ‘Last, but not least.’” Kris said, trying to cheer Liam up by making a little joke about the way he was announced.
Dorothy raised a valid point about the possible contents of the locked closet. In fact, that explanation made more sense than Krzysztof’s. Let’s hope no one else notices that. A praise was in order though. That, and he could relate to the whole show magic thing. “That’s an amazing idea! I get what you mean. Almost all of the car sounds you hear are added in postproduction. Most of the cars I drive on set are pretty much the same, and only differ in the outer looks. I see them having similar sort of ‘magic’.”
With Liam as the arbiter, Kris was ready to play. He was a decent player. He had weaknesses, he’s no Ultimate Board Game Pro after all. He was too impulsive to care about the bigger picture, about the strategy. However, it was offset by the smaller-scale play, by his tactics. His moves were quick, and fueled more by instinct, gained by playing with his dad, rather than deep thought. It still should work against a novice.

"Well, we just got here. I don't think we should worry for now and just enjoy ourselves before it's time to get serious. Especially you, Liam. I can tell you're worried, but please take it easy. We're friends and competitors both at once. I think even if we fail to get into the academy, we should cheer on those who managed to get into the next round, right?"
Dorothy had a lot of fun discussing their future life with her new friends. She was glad she signed herself on for SYCYAU, if she hadn't, she wouldn't have met people like Liam and Krzysztof here.
"Thanks for making sure we won't cheat, Liam.", saying that, the Polyglot thought about her next move.
"Hmm... if I move here, he's probably gonna set his next piece over there, which would leave me in a bad situation...
Dorothy was never a big board game player, but she knew the basic rules to a lot of them. She had no idea how good Krzysztof was or whether he was holding back only to utterly demolish Dorothy when the time was right.
"I'm setting my next piece... here.", she said as she moving her board piece. She was confident about her move, not realizing that she left a hole in her defenses.
"By the way, what do you mean, 'Waking up to no smog', Krzysztof?"

I wonder who's going to make it into the academy. There's going to be those who can brute-force their way through the show, and others who're going to outsmart the rest of us. Where do I fit into that? I'm not going to be able to make it on pure force, and I'm not really the type of person to outsmart others. How am I going to make it in when I don't even have a strategy of my own?
"Y-Yeah, you guys have a point. Last pick shouldn't mean worst competitor! We can make sure to look after each other in this competition! If we have each other, what could go wrong? And it's like Dorothy said, this is s-still before the the competition begins, so we should relax for now."
They're right. There's no use worrying about it right now. I just have to keep calm. I still have plenty of time to prepare for whatever lies ahead.
"You're welcome! I prefer to sit and watch over participating."
It's nice to be see them both enjoying themselves. I wasn't sure what to expect once I got here, but if the rest of my our stay at the manor is going to be like this, then I think I'm okay with it.
Suddenly a smile started to appear on Liam's face.
"You know, this place is nicer than I thought it would be. Same with the people staying here. Almost everyone seems a lot n-nicer than I thought they'd be. Especially you guys."

“Well, if that was the case, I’d certainly cheer on the ones who are still left” But well, let’s be honest. Kris would not lose, would he? I mean, he has lost some things in the past. But he has, hopefully, learnt from his mistakes. He’d be able to pull this off. It not like he even has to be the first. He only has to be in the top 10. Not that he’d be satisfied with just the tenth place.
“I should thank you too, Liam. An unbiased observer is crucial when it comes to any contest.”
Kris noticed the deficiency in Dorothy’s defenses almost immediately. He exploited it and gained a significant advantage. What he did not notice is that if he made another move, he would be able to with certainty after a long series of moves. He just did not think far enough to play the optimal move. He still played it confidently though. If he did not notice, he did not notice after all.
“Ah, it’s a Lil’ Hong Kong thing, you know. Instead of putting smog filters on the factories, they put the smog filters on those who live there” He showed the gas mask to Dorothy. “Don’t get me wrong, though. It’s still a place I grew up in. I still think fondly of it. By the way, you said my name perfectly. Just as expected from the ultimate Polyglot.” He said, impressed. He decided to skip the tongue twister, as he felt the result would be rather predictable. “Though I prefer my friends to call me ‘Kris’, or ‘Krzychu’, either of those will do.” He said with a smile on his face.
“Liam, to be honest, I like it here as well. I guess I expected the competition to be less of a healthy one and more of a cutthroat one. Good to see I’m wrong.”

"Grk...!" Dorothy bit her lip as Kris pulled off his maneuver. Seeing him move the game pieces to his advantage made Dorothy grip her staff tighter. (She kind of forgot that she didn't actually leave it in her room yet, despite having seen her room already. She's just a human after all.)
The Polyglot usually wasn't this determined to win, but in a way she wanted to prove herself to her peers. So she looked over the game board and then looked directly into Kris' eyes, her gaze saying: "You haven't won yet. I'm still in this!"
She then picked up one of her few remaining pieces and moved it forward, knocking out one of Kris' pieces. He was still in the advantage though, but Dorothy was sure she could turn it around somehow. She's only defeated when she has 0 pieces left!
After making her move, the pink-haired girl put aside her staff to look at the gas mask. "Little Hong Kong, hm? I've never been there before, so I wouldn't know what the place is like. I grew up in Little London, myself. It's a beautiful place. But then again, it's always nice to learn about places I haven't been to before."
She smiled at back at Kris after he complimented her on her talent. "Thanks, Kris." With a cheeky smile on her face, she added: "And if you mess up somehow in the show, I'll call you Krzysztof, okay?" She giggled after that.
"Yeah, definitely. I agree with you two.", Dorothy said after listening to the young men talk about the competition. "The competition's gonna be both fun and serious with a cast like ours. Just because we're nice doesn't mean we don't want to win. But even though I'll be technically one of your enemies when the show starts for real, I'll be cheering you on regardless!"
