364 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Even despite the whole bad shit going on, Ren seemed perfectly happy. Of course it would seem that way, but Ren wasn’t an idiot. This situation was serious but he trusted the foundation to save them. After all, he was quite important he liked to think, even if they might catch onto the fact he was a bit upset over the incident after which he was trained by the foundation themselves. He had no family except for the foundation. They were his whole life now. He wanted to help them, as well as help heal everyone who needed it. He wanted to be a good person – and make the betrayal he made worthwhile. Ren just… wished he could be forgiven by the ones he betrayed, even though he would do it over and over and over again.
No matter what, a smile on the fact of your doctor was always a good cure. He always tried to find the bright-side of everything, focusing not on failing and letting someone die, but focusing on saving those around him. Doctor perhaps was not the truest title to him – he was more of a medic, working under the pressure of dying. Ren didn’t bother worrying about his own health – those around him were far more important than his mental fortitude.
And so, Ren found himself during the day not long after the competition sitting in the living room, his eyes closed as he rested on the couch, feet on the table. He was taking deep breaths, invoking what he saw on television as a way to repress bad feelings, something about Vulcans, but he knew they weren’t real. Meditation was basically what it was, but based on a fictional alien race. He pressed a few pressure points that he found tended to help him relax, but that competition was tiring and when tired it was a lot harder to control himself. After all, he had rushed downstairs and got sad when he didn’t get to see the producer’s dead body – he needed to control himself so people weren’t freaked out around him.
Why couldn’t he just be normal?
Oh, right. Because of the foundation. That was right.

Koneko strolled into the living room, hoping a more relaxing space could help her relieve her stress. It was likely unsurprising, just considering the circumstances, but everything that had been happening was... Well, it was weighing on her terribly. Her family... Well, really, it was the scientists who helped her, plus a cat, but despite her family's odd shape and size, she loved them so very dearly. The idea that she might lose them... The amount of dread that thought made her feel almost made her want to black out. To make matters worse--because of course, they always must somehow get worse--there were now two people that could die alongside them. If the bear stayed true to his word, him killing the hostages could very easily be rationalized as his fault. I mean, it wasn't like Koneko had given the bear the idea to have hostages, or helped him set it up in any way, so while them dying was a terrible awful horrible possibility, at least Koneko would not have to face the guilt of their deaths. Nero Fiammes and Valentina Rossi were a different case. If they died, sure, the blame would be mostly on Monokuma, but a scarily sizable chunk of it will be on her. Nero volunteered, which took a bit of the weight of her worries off her shoulders, but like a damned idiot, Koneko had chosen Valentina after she made a rude joke. It was petty and disgustingly immature of her to do, but there was no taking it back. On top of that, there was another volunteer, the young knight Liam Dayton, and she had simply ignored him in order to childishly scold another person in a stupid stunt that may just get her killed. Koneko preferred not to swear, but at this moment, she wanted to let loose a good bit of colorful language. Allowing herself to drop onto the couch, and not aware of anyone else around her, she buried her head in her hands and decided the least she could do for herself at this point in time was let out her stress. "God fucking dammit," she swore, her voice only slightly above a frustrated hiss. Of course, being that timing is always on dear Koneko's side (not) it was only after her distasteful language had left her mouth that she noticed she had sat down right beside another contestant--the doctor, she recalled, who had tried to hug Monokuma, Ren Umeki--and was left staring at him wide-eyed as her face warmed. "I-I'm so sorry, Mr. Umeki! I d-didn't see you there! Oh gosh, you didn't hear that, right?"tag(s): @someone ━ words: 000 ━ remember that you are loved

439 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Ren knew someone was coming, but he didn’t know who it was – it was probably just another contestant and apparently, they wanted to speak to him! He didn’t want them to be hurt but he did want to prove himself useful to those here. After all, he’d rather not get murdered… then again, he wanted everyone to live! So really, if someone really wanted to murder someone, he’d rather him lose his life than the others here. They were all so cool and so amazing…
When Koneko spoke, Ren smiled from ear to ear despite his closed eyes. Koneko. The counselor. She was super pretty and would’ve been in his original alliance if only he felt there was an unbalance in it because he had already picked Orica and Dorothy and Kaizo. If Koneko were added then there would be three girls and only two guys! Of course, it wouldn’t work with the name either. The Horsepeople had to be four. And he already had assigned names to each of the members… he still wanted to work with Koneko. As a counselor, she knew of psychology and how to make people feel better. However, being forced out of his meditative state by her sitting next to him left him vulnerable to outbursts and not being able to fully control himself.
“Oh! That’s okay Kikai-chan~! I’ll keep what you said a secret from everyone else.” Ren laughed, throwing his head back and holding his stomach as if Koneko had said something that would kill him with laughing, even though obviously that was not the case. Ren calmed after a few seconds wiping a non-existent tear from his eye. ”I guess those collars got you bothered, huh? I’m glad it wasn’t me who won. Just between you and me: I’m glad I didn’t have to do that. I would’ve volunteered but you picked them before I could speak up. That’s okay though, I’m pretty sure we’re just fine. The Future Foundation saved me before, they’ll do it again! If not because of me, but because of the rest of you here! You all are so amazing and talented. They might need a bit extra time, so it’s okay if you kill me. I won’t mind too much. It’d give them enough time to come and save the rest of you! It’s not really selfless because I get the joy of knowing I helped save all of your lives!” Whoa boy, you’re talking a lot and she just sat down next to her. If you want to be your friend, Ren, maybe you shouldn’t start off so – so weird and rambling-like.

At first, Koneko can only stare blankly at Ren as he rambles, but it only takes a moment before she cracks, a soft smile forming on her lips. "His cheer is... well, infectious." She giggles, both at his words and at her own internal pun. Listening to him had filled her with an odd sense of relief, as she saw another person who still held on to the hope of this ending peacefully. However... Her relief quickly melted away as Ren offered to be her victim, her relaxed smile falling away into a look of horror. " M-Mr. Umeki, please, you must value your own life a bit more. There must be a way we can end this without any violence." She placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, trying to smile. "Please, don't ask anyone else to harm you. These are sensitive times, where everyone is under pressure. I am confident that we can solve this and escape without anyone getting hurt, but there is still the possibility that someone may become overwhelmed with fear and actually..." She trailed off, looking away. Removing her hand from his shoulder and placing them on her lap, she sighed miserably. "These are the times when an Ultimate Counsellor would be truly needed, but I find it hard to help others when I am one also in need of help. But please, don't ask anyone else to kill you. If even one contestant dies as a result of this... I'm not sure if I could live with myself and the guilt."She tried to give him another smile, weak, but sincere. "Every human being's life has value. Their hearts beat, their lungs breathe, and their minds race. I want to protect those things."tag(s): @someone ━ words: 000 ━ remember that you are loved

396 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Ren shook his head, a tiny, sad sort of grin on his face. ”I know. I want to protect them too. I am a doctor. I have vowed to do no harm. However, one of us may be a walking corpse. If that were to be anyone, it should be me. I value myself dearly, but if I have to give it up to save all of you, well I will be glad to do so. If only one must die, it should be someone who wishes to save the others, it should be a choice, not an accident. I should have died years ago, Kikai-chan, but because I lived I could help so many good people live. Agatha was the last on I saw, I can’t say why, but she’s a sweet old lady and I would give my life for her as well, even if she would not live as many years as I would. It would be an honor to die saving another.” Just like him. If he saved enough people maybe he could be forgiven by him. Or perhaps not, because of the nature of what happened. However, Ren could not ever bring himself to just stand by while another got hurt and not help ease their pain. Everyone was a child, parent, family, friend to another – and their deaths or pain would cause a ripple throughout everyone in the world and make it a sadder place. Every instance of any pain would hurt – but he had little anyone left who truly cared for him and those who did would understand he would rather be in pain than cause it to another.
”Kikai-chan… I could never live with myself if another was hurt and I could do something about it. If it comes down to it, I beg you to kill me and save those two and everyone else. I would not ask you to do this prematurely. Only if the Foundation needs more time. Please. I do not another to have to be sacrificed over mine.” Ren tilted his head and smiled widely, his face looking bright despite the grim request. ”After all, you won’t need me around when the people have you to help make them feel better and understand their feelings. There’s plenty of good doctors who can take over for me and save even more lives. I’m replaceable.” [newclass=".mbox2 b, strong]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass] [newclass=".mbox2 i, em]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass]

Koneko could only look on in horror at his suggestion, but after a moment, it melted into a deep sigh. "So you think nobody here needs you just because you aren't the only doctor? ...Don't joke. I'm just as terrified as everyone else, and it's made me pretty useless. How can I help others feel okay when... I'm hardly okay, myself?" She buried her head in her hands. "I won't kill anyone. It's against my very nature, my mind simply wouldn't allow me to do so. Please stop asking me to do it, don't ask anyone to do it. You have no need to martyr yourself."
She sat back up, looking at him with a somewhat morose expression, before sighing again. "...Perhaps I should try to play my assigned role for a bit here," she said, before she adjusted herself, and suddenly her whole presence changed to one more professional and analytical. "You seem to have the idea stuck in your head that you're worth less than the others here, despite having talents that would be undeniably useful in our situation. Why do you think that?"tag(s): @someone ━ words: 000 ━ remember that you are loved

231 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Ren bit his lower lip. Fuck. He wasn’t in control of his emotions right now. He just let stupid stuff slip. He knew talking like that would upset people and if his patients were watching from home, they would probably be sad because he was saying such things. He didn’t want to show everyone just how fucked up he was in the head, but he couldn’t stop himself. He should have meditated in his room where he wouldn’t be interrupted. It was hard to stop himself once he got going.
”Have you ever seen someone die before your eyes, Kikai-chan?” Ren looked away frowning a little bit. ”You could’ve stopped it, but you chose someone else. Made a decision that saved one life and destroyed the other. You chose a stranger over your best friend. The look in their eyes as they die in your arms and you can’t do anything about it! I just want to help as many people as possible. I’d rather be the one dying with no way to save me than my friends and family and –“ Ren quickly paused and stood up. ”S-Sorry I shouldn’t have said that. Would you like some tea, Kikai-chan? I’m parched. I can get you something while I get myself something to drink.” Classic. He was just trying to change the subject and he was obviously very unsubtle about it.

Koneko remained unfazed, and did not easily fall for his ploy to change the subject. Unfortunately, it seems Ren had yet to learn a very important truth: There is no force on this earth as powerful as Koneko in work mode when she's trying to dig into your brain. Her expression unchanging, she answered his first question with a very simple, yet chilling answer. "I have never seen anyone die, but I have been the first to discover a body. Would it make you a bit less uncomfortable if I talked about that before you talked about your own experiences?"
It was somewhat startling how Koneko had changed. Her presence radiated an aura that made one want to tell her how they were feeling, but by it's very nature it also felt unnatural. It was as if one were looking at a book and self-diagnosing themselves, or reading advice online. There would still be a moment of relief upon being able to fully process what had been bothering them so much, but it lacked any kind of human touch or presence. However, while her face wasn't very expressive, there was still a warmth in her eyes that did ease the tension somewhat. It was clear that, even if she was much less personable like this, she still cared deeply about whoever she was working with. tag(s): @someone ━ words: 000 ━ remember that you are loved

298 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Ren frowned and shook his head. He looked up looking for some cameras and then just threw on a fake smile which lacked his usual brightness but it was still a smile. There was plenty of people who depended on him, loved him, and trusted him to their care. They would surely be watching as he broke down. He couldn’t do that. It would give ol’ Gertrude the sniffles and might worsen Rodrick’s depression. And don’t even get him started on Alexis, who was dying of cancer right now and she might just give up hope if she saw him sad and talking like this. He had to be strong no matter the cost to himself. He had to smile and be there for them. He had to be there for everyone. He had to be strong and not slip up like he was doing right this second.
“Ah hahahaha!” Ren laughed loudly, ”I was just kidding! I got you there, didn’t I? I’m just fine, Kikai-chan! You don’t gotta worry about me. I’ve never seen any of that! Never ever!” Liar. It didn’t matter, the pressure he felt just put onto him by himself, even since before… before he lost his best friend, before he couldn’t sleep without seeing those eyes glaring at him with such malice and hate, was too much. He couldn’t get himself to talk about it. It wasn’t like anyone really cared about that. They all just wanted to be happy and so why would they want to talk about bad stuff like that?
Ren quickly grabbed one of the magazines and leaned back opening it up. ”I mean you can talk about yourself all you want. I’m a doctor after all! I can help with psychology. Are you troubled by your experience?”

Koneko's expression remained unchanged. "I see, so it seems you feel some kind of need to bottle up your emotions--I believe many can relate. However, many seem to forget that emotions manifest very physically in our brains, in the form of chemicals and hormones, and thus dealing with them in an irresponsible manor can cause palpable damage, physically, and even more so emotionally."She paused for a few moments before continuing. "I won't force you to talk. You're not my patient, after all. However, as fellow doctors, I do hope that someday we can forge enough trust so that I may help you, should you need to do so."With that, she blinked once, and... In an instant, she was completely back to normal. The air around her loosened, and suddenly she seemed so much more human and animated once more. She looked at Ren with a gentle expression. "Relax, I'll leave you alone now, no need to be so jumpy." She giggled a little. "...Was I scary? I've been told it's a little startling how quickly my whole demeanor can change when I go into 'business mode'. But really, I won't try to pick your brain anymore if you don't want me to, but just promise me you won't ask anyone else to hurt you, alright?"tag(s): @someone ━ words: 000 ━ remember that you are loved

384 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Ren’s smile faded for a moment while Koneko talked about it – it wasn’t that he didn’t trust her… he just couldn’t tell anyone. It would just make them sad. It could kill people who looked up to him, or so he believed. It wouldn’t be surprising if Alexis had died during the time before this game started up – he hadn’t seen her for several days, and she was on her last stretch. However, he couldn’t do anything for her, and that was the worst part of it all. He didn’t want to see her die because he was a failure, because he could do nothing for her. That was why he wanted to be the one, if anyone, to be murdered here so the foundation had more time to come. Those watching would understand that, right? He just wanted to be there, and not take the time for himself that another could be living on.
”Kikai-chan, I don’t make promises I cannot keep. You understand this yes? Wouldn’t you wish to give your life for another if you could? Save another’s life, make a difference in this world, be the reason a whole slew of people didn’t have to mourn for ages because someone they loved died? That’s everything I’ve always wanted. I’ve always wanted to save people – and if that means someone murders me instead of someone else, then that’s fine with me. I want to live. I do… I just don’t want someone else to die when I could have been in their place instead. I don’t value my life any less, but I couldn’t live with myself if someone died and I couldn’t save them.”
Ren looked up at the cameras again and then set down the magazine. “This isn’t private. It’s a television show that everyone can see. I don’t want to be sad and make everyone who is watching sad because of it. I want to be a guiding light, the one with a smile that brightens the moods of those around. Even if I might not truly feel happy, knowing that I possibly could improve someone’s day does make me happy. Talking about sad stuff will just make others sad. They’ll pity me, and when they see me smile, they’ll only think about the sad stuff I said.” [newclass=".mbox2 b, strong]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass] [newclass=".mbox2 i, em]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass]

"That's..." Koneko was at a loss on how to respond. "I would sacrifice myself, in a heartbeat, but it's different for me." She looked down, her eyes foggy. "You're... Alive. You breathe and think and every part of your body works in perfect sync. You're all miracles of biological evolution, whereas I..." She trailed off, and shook her head. "You say you're replaceable? Well, truthfully, the one who's easiest to replace here... is me. Sure, there may only be one of me right now, but if I died in this game... Give it a month, and there will be another Koneko Kikaimoto to take my place."Koneko let out another sigh. "Besides, I'm sure the future foundation cut off the broadcast the second Monokuma popped up. If him invading the show was shown publicly, well... There'd be mass panic. I don't think anyone is seeing what happens in here anymore, except the Future Foundation themselves. Even then... Well, I think they're too busy trying to get us out of here to pick you apart for having feelings."She looked up at him again, her eyes serious but caring. "I won't go all psychologist on you again, but... I still urge you to try and open up. It doesn't even take a professional to tell that you're hurting, and I..." She shifted a bit, somewhat uncomfortable. "You seem like a very nice person, Mr Umeki, you have infectious cheer and an air of sincerity about you. I don't like it when good people are left to hurt alone." tag(s): @someone ━ words: 000 ━ remember that you are loved

383 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Ren narrowed his eyes considering her first words for several moments, before then regarding the rest of what she said. She could be replaced? Oh god. Was she a clone? That was so cool. Maybe they could clone him too. Maybe they could clone G- no. They wouldn’t do that. While Ren loved him, the foundation was the one who killed his best friend after all. Even still, maybe Ren could sneak in all the lives he couldn’t save and let them live again and this time maybe they wouldn’t have to suffer in life ever again. And if he could sneak his best friend in and get him cloned… then he could at least apologize to him.
But she was talking about how he was alive, insinuating she wasn’t – did that mean she was not living? Was she a dead body walking around or – oh. That was it. Was she possibly artificial intelligence? A robot? Ren wasn’t a dumb person but from how she was talking, it made it sound like that at least. However, she didn’t say it so Ren wasn’t gonna accuse her of that because she probably wanted to keep it a secret. He just would note it in his head and not just come outright and say it and make her uncomfortable.
“There might be another Kikai-chan, but they won’t be you. They won’t have your memories or be exactly like you are right now. They won’t have your soul – because that is completely unable to copy. And if you kill me or anyone, you’ll be executed anyways unless they save you because we got enough time from it. It’s not just one sacrifice for the whole cast of this show – there needs to be two.”
Ren took a deep breath and looked at Koneko. ”I betrayed my best friend to heal someone who wanted to kill him – and in return he tried to kill me, and was killed by others standing by. His name was Grey and I loved him – I grew up with him. He was family. All I wanted to do was help someone who was hurting and he died because of my actions. Little Berlin is a dangerous place and I pray no one here has to go through what happened to me there.” [newclass=".mbox2 b, strong]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass] [newclass=".mbox2 i, em]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass]

Koneko could no longer look him in the eye. "So that is what it was like to grow up in this world..." Steeling herself, she looked at him again, a new determination in her eyes. " I'd tell you I'm sorry, although I'm sure you've heard those words countless times. One of the hardest things about being a counsellor is that you can't ever really tell people 'it's okay', because it's not your place to decide how another person should feel." Koneko stood up, facing him with a level gaze. "You must allow yourself to feel. Believe me when I say I much prefer it when you smile, but if that's not really how you're feeling, you'll just make yourself hurt worse. If you're sad, angry, bitter, or... or guilty, you must allow those feelings to run their course."Then, she averted her eyes again. "Besides, I'm not worried about myself at all. You say there needs to be two sacrifices? Well, really, there will only be one. You die, and then... Something is 'executed' for it. You say I have a soul... But can a soul really exist within a machine?" She frowned, her expression reflecting something miserable. "That's just it, you know? I can't hurt people, I'm just not programmed that way. I-I was trying to keep the fact that I wasn't human a secret, but I was never built to pass as anything other than what I am--a machine."She let out a breath, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. "There, that's my 'big secret'. If anyone's still watching, and you ever want to talk more about your past... Well, the 'audience' will be much more concerned with the fact that I'm not human instead of what you're saying."tag(s): @someone ━ words: 000 ━ remember that you are loved

306 words notes: notes A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI [attr=class,mbox2]Huh. So, she just admitted it and probably Ren’s initial reaction of ‘I knew that’ showing on his face made it impossible to recover and pretend he didn’t guess it a little bit before. Ren leaned back on the couch and set the magazine on the arm next to him. Ren took a hand and placed it on Koneko’s shoulder before smiling a real true smile and tilting his head.
“Of course you have a soul. There will never be anything exactly like you again, no matter how hard they try. Humans aren’t that different than machines. I can take a gun apart and put it back together in two minutes and I can cut into someone and make them work right given enough time.”
Ren removed his hand from her shoulder and stood up, jumping onto the table and flicking his lab coat so it flew as if he were a super hero, though he nearly fell off the table when he first landed. “Don’t you worry, I’m here. I won’t let others find out what you just told me and I’ll prove to you that you have a soul just like everyone else! Do not worry, Dr. Umeki is on the clock and he won’t let you down!”
Ren frowned for a moment before he pointed at Koneko. “It’s not that I don’t trust you with everything – everything would just make you sad. What matters is the here and now, not the past. Just gotta keep pushing forward and try to move on, yeah? Yeah, it’s scary when I remember back, but that stuff can’t come and get me anymore. People are dead and when they die I can’t do anything. Might as well try to help those who are right here in front of me instead of feel bad because I failed before.” [newclass=".mbox2 b, strong]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass] [newclass=".mbox2 i, em]color:#2ed1aa;[/newclass]
