THE WORLD'S ON HEROIN
AND THE WORLD KEEPS TURNING AT A TURTLE'S PACE
[attr="class","les"]The entire situation Mayumi was thrusted into was simply mind boggling. She and her other peers were on a fucking island. Either this place was just a hoax, which it most likely was, or the mastermind was somehow able to create an elevator that could transport them to a secluded island at mach speed. Even with the recent execution, Mayumi knew things couldn't become this bizarre. It had to be a trap, there was nothing else it could be, and she was correct once Monokuma revealed the motive of weather altercations. Someone WILL die on this island, and Mayumi had low hopes for her chances of survival after her recent outburst.
Exploring the island for a little while, she came upon the Observatory, a darkly lit room with a giant telescope and a cool breeze. Both this place and the ocean would be the perfect places for her to ease her stress, so she felt satisfied that she discovered this area.
Checking out the walls, she noticed giant splotches of glow in the dark paint. A unique artistic decision, yes, but awfully executed. Even if it was meant to match the dark matter of space, they could've made the paint splatters look cosmic, rather than just sloppy paint blotches.
She walked up to the giant telescope, but didn't feel the need to check it out because 1. it wasn't night, and 2. if the island was a ruse the sky could be a screen like the one in the backyard. She decided to sit on one of the pedestals to reflect on the current situation, but it felt very uncomfortable since the miniature pillar could barely contain her plump ass. Instead she leaned on a nearby wall like she usually does, and put her headphones on the further the relaxing vibe. | [attr="class","goodness"] ✉ @nobody ✎ 0000 words |

While their new situation was less than ideal for Irene, with a harsh climate and all manner of deadly creatures likely to be lurking among the trees and beneath the depths, she had found sanctuary of a sort. The temperature and lighting were far more subdued than that of the outside, far more similar to what she had grown used to. Not exactly ideal for her work as it lacked tools, workbenches, and really furniture in general, but it brought her comfort. Mankind had sought to control their surroundings for a reason once they had decided to settle, and had built houses to protect themselves from it. Why one would wish to vacation to such a place was not something she understood, but she would likely learn in time.
She adjusted the lenses on her goggles, flicking some of the attachments on either side in front of them. Perhaps some way of helping her see in the dark? She didn't say, stepping further into the observatory and, well, observing its contents. The room had been put in place to allow them to gaze into the night sky. Many great minds had done so for centuries, bringing enlightenment on the mysteries of the cosmos and furthering humanity's understanding of their world and others. It was not something she could make time for, as her own trade took much of her time, and the time not spent on it was short and reserved, but it was a fascinating subject nonetheless.
After an examination of the telescope, she spoke. "I do not wish to frighten you, Miss Otsuka, but I have entered." Noticing the presence of the headphones, she opted to take a few steps closer and wave in a manner similar to a poorly made amusement park animatronic. "Hello to you." She said, a bit closer and slightly louder, but no less monotone.

[attr="class","les"]She noticed the door open ever so carefully, and in came Irene. Mayumi was delighted to see her again, as Irene was currently her only ally. However, the tinkerer seemed more invested in the telescope so she decided to keep a low profile for a bit. Irene's movements were still mechanical, yet she seemed to have more pep in her step since the last time they talked. She really was changing, and that rendered her in a more gleeful state. As she lowered her head and gave a tiny grin, Irene called out to her and approached her. Mayumi put her headphones around her neck and was ready to converse.
"S'up!" she said with a genuine smile. "How's it going? Seems like you're not into the beach very much, I feel the same in most cases. It's just too hot and crowded, and I also don't swim so that makes my options limited to the sand. Also, Monokuma was talking about ideal paradises earlier, do you have one?" it was obvious that Monokuma's description of Irene's paradise was false, though she felt like she could predict Irene's response. | [attr="class","goodness"] ✉ @nobody ✎ 0000 words |

"Our current accommodations excluded, I am quite well." Irene nodded, giving Mayumi a small smile, then turning more serious again. "You guess correctly. I do not care for the conditions on this island. I prefer the control within my shop to the unpredictable world outside. I do not think I have ever seen such a place as this for myself, except in photographs. It is as unappealing as I had imagined. I have gained a profound distaste for it in our short time here. The heat is boiling, unlike any I have experienced in my life. I do not care for the ocean, or what it may offer. The sand is simply sand, not of exceptional annoyance, but not of inherent use." The graphic designer seemed to be pleased for some reason, and it was not due to their surroundings, from what she was saying.
They had formed a friendship, had they not? In that case, Mayumi was possibly pleased to be speaking to her. In a friendship, this was common procedure. Friends would meet on a regular basis and spend time with one another, speaking or participating in some activity together. They would do this because they enjoyed each other's company. The graphic designer appeared to be in good spirits upon her arrival, and Irene could not say the time spent with Mayumi had been a negative experience. It had been quite the opposite in their time spent so far. "In a sense, yes. I am most comfortable within the world of my workshop. A simple answer, but a true one regardless. May I ask the same of you?"

[attr="class","les"]"Good question," she inquired. "I guess the closest thing to a personal paradise would be my room back at home. It doesn't just have the fundamentals of air, food and water, but it everything else I love, all on one computer. Art, music, games, you name it. That hunk of junk was my fucking life before coming here… wow, I never realized how much of a dork I am." She giggled to herself, remembering this odd quirk she hid from others. Mayumi also realized that her interactions with Irene were the best social experiences she had her entire life. She had a couple friends in the past, but they were never close to her and disappeared when she needed them the most. And then there was……… no, they aren't worth remembering in the slightest. That person is the reason for Mayumi's more pessimistic nature and nihilistic beliefs about humanity, but it was time to move on. Her face seemed somber for a split second, but it returned to normal after coming up with an idea.
To make Irene open up more, Mayumi decided to give her a mental puzzle. She didn't know if the toymaker knew of the riddle or not, but it wouldn't hurt to try.
"How about a challenge?" she said with a friendly grin.

"I see... I own one such device, though it seldom sees much use. It was provided to me by my mother and father. They see it as important to own. It does not see use in my work, and never in my leisure time. Merely in searching for information and sending for supplies. However... It is... good that you enjoy it. You use it in your work, of course, and in your time off as well. A fascinating machine, useful for so many purposes. I am... happy for you." Irene nodded, giving a slight bow this time. Such a device could likely be applied to her own work, though a use didn't immediately come to mind.
For better or for worse, they had been selected because they were the best at what they did. While the competition had not gone as planned, and had turned for the worse, this remained true. Mayumi remained incredibly skilled, and had begun as an ally. It was interesting to hear what she had to say, on her interests and on other matters. She could for certain call her a friend now, if the definition she knew was accurate.
"Hmm... I believe I know the answer. The objects that may enter contain double letters in their names, much like each word in green glass door. For instance, trees and wood may enter, but not leaves. Is this correct?"

[attr="class","les"]"Fucking bullseye!" Mayumi congratulated Irene, raising her fist in the air excitedly.
"Guess that was too easy for you, yeah? Either way, radical job."
She put her fist out for a fist bump. At first Irene didn't seem like she understood what the gesture meant, but she figured it out after a short pregnant pause and awkwardly curled her hand into a fist and gently bumped Mayumi's gloved fist. It was uncoordinated and gawky, but Mayumi smiled regardless. Mayumi was beginning to see past her faults, and accepted her for who she was. She had yet to find these qualities in everyone else, but she was glad she had one true friend.
Since Irene was starting to understand the social constructs of open-ended conversations, Mayumi waited for her to speak so they could go back and forth. | [attr="class","goodness"] ✉ @nobody ✎ 0000 words |

Irene didn't seem to understand the significance of the fist bump, but deduced it to have some similarity to the high five, which was correct by the looks of it. She had hoped to gain knowledge from her fellow competitors upon arriving. Not necessarily knowledge on social conventions, but it was knowledge that would nonetheless have its use. To accomplish success on the first attempt was a small victory. A smaller victory still than being selected for the competition, but a victory.
"Thank you, Ms. Otsuka. It is not a complicated one, but it is a well constructed one. You have done well yourself." She gave a small smile again, nodding. "If you would allow me, I may provide the next riddle? It is a grim one, but one of interest." A pause. "Two men sit in a restaurant, discussing the events surrounding the death of one man's grandfather. While his grandfather was in a business meeting, he fell asleep. He dreamed he was in the time of the French Revolution, being brought to the guillotine to be put to death. The moment of the blade's impact within his dream, he awoke with a heart attack and perished. The other man claims his associate is lying about this story. What is his reasoning?" Another pause. She stared blankly from behind her goggles, but was smiling a bit, so it wasn't nearly as unnerving.

"Obviously because the man describing the grandfather's death couldn't have known what he was dreaming, yeah?"
As she awaited a reply, she began formulating possible conversation topics: the past, music, aspirations, etc. However, she found it rude to intrude on Irene before she can say anything, so she kept these thoughts in the back of her head. | [attr="class","goodness"] ✉ @nobody ✎ 0000 words |

"That is correct, Ms. Otsuka. Excellent work. It is, as you have said, 'fucking bullseye'." Irene gave another weak attempt at a fist bump. A bullseye was usually used to indicate some successful attempt at completing a task. Thus, the expression could be concluded to have a positive connotation. She had gained another piece of knowledge, expanding her vocabulary and possibly helping her to communicate more efficiently with Mayumi. "You have done a 'radical' job." She was not certain of the connotation of the word within this context, but it was possibly to do with having done it thoroughly, in which case it was also positive.
"I must thank you for helping me to learn. You have a talented mind. You are... a good person" She nodded. While they had discussed puzzles and riddles for a while, and briefly spoken on their ideal paradises, there was more to be discussed. Many subjects could be talked on in their exchange of ideas. One idea in particular occurred to her, and others could proceed. "If it is a topic on which you wish to speak on... May I know of what you consider your greatest accomplishment in your work?"

[attr="class","les"]Mayumi almost giggled at Irene's response, but wondered if the tinkerer knew the difference between 'laughing with' and 'laughing at' someone, so she didn't bother with that. After giving Irene a fist bump in return, she was flabbergasted by Irene's compliment. It was… the nicest thing had anyone had ever said to her, even kinder than the words her parents said, which were hollow words and promises she was all too familiar with. Mayumi blushed and gave her a Gatsby-like smile, a smile filled with utmost kindness, respect, reassurance, and trust.
"Th-that… really means a lot to me…… thank you!!"
It was at that moment that Mayumi and Irene weren't going to be just pals, but best friends till the very end. She would have Irene's back and teach her about the way the world works, while she in return would educate Mayumi from her unique perspective and hone her intellect. She almost felt like hugging the goggled girl, but she thought that would be a bit much and too sudden. Though she knew that she would have to make more friends than just Irene. The last time she only had one friend… well… she'd rather forget those experiences. However, after hearing Irene's question about her greatest art achievement, she fell silent and tensed up for a second.
Her greatest achievement in graphic design is directly related to the source of her hatred for the world and her cynical nature, and she felt like Irene couldn't handle her story at this point in their relationship. She would definitely tell her another time… if the two of them made it out the island alive at least. So, she decided to describe her second greatest achievement in her field.
"I don't know if they're in Little Paris or not, but I designed the emblem for the Global Police Force, a law enforcement organization that have stations in every sector. The logo itself is of a gold phoenix rising from the ashes, to symbolize a brand new beginning of reduced crime rates. Now that logo is everywhere since they're involved with the Future Foundation. Though just so you know, I don't support the GPF because they're allies to the shitty Foundation. So, are you comfortable telling me your greatest achievement in your field of expertise?" | [attr="class","goodness"] ✉ @nobody ✎ 0000 words |

Irene smiled back, the small smile she had smiled several times before. This was becoming a more regular occurrence for her. There had been cause for celebration in recent times, but also more time spent with Mayumi. Correlation did not always equal causation, but to conclude that the two were equal in these circumstances would be correct. She had done well in relation to social protocols, and had brought a smile to the face of her friend. Both small victories. It had been a day of accomplishments.
"I am... glad about this. It is of much significance to me as well. I have put forth much effort." She nodded. There were gestures of friendship beyond the fist bump and high five, but she was not certain of their connotations or use. She would have to learn more about them. For now, she listened attentively. "I see. It is impressive. Regardless of the organization's actions, it is an assignment of importance. I am certain you did it well."
Her expression turned more serious at the subject of her own accomplishments. It was clear she took her work as a matter of grave importance. It was the reason she was here among the other competitors, and her reason for being. Her work was her life. "My greatest accomplishment is the ownership of my shop. I worked under my master, the best in his field, advancing my skill. Upon his passing, he deemed me his successor. I own and operate it alone, continuing his work. I produced my own creations time and time again in my training. I became worthy of the ownership of the March Hare Toy Shop." She paused. Her usual monotone seemed more monotone still while explaining it. These words were an indisputable fact to her. She remained silent for several seconds, quiet enough to potentially hear the metaphorical gears turning, before speaking up again.
"My apologies. If you refer to a single accomplishment among my creations, all have the same care and effort put into their design. None is greater than the other." She gave Mayumi another smile, possibly as if to reassure her, though its precise meaning couldn't be determined.

She paused for a second, thinking of a way to compliment Irene the way she complimented her.
"You're also a kick-ass person, your kindness, skills, and knowledge honestly impress me, and that's incredibly rare for a person these days."
Suddenly, Mayumi could feel her stomach growl. She had a bitching time with Irene, but she had to eat if she wanted to stay hydrated.
"Well, it was splendid talking with you again, but I gotta go to Exile Island to get some grub. You know what they say: "hydrate before you die-drate!"
