Name: Mugen
Age: Unknown; thought to be 18
Appearance: Tsuyukusa – Amatsuki
Height: 5'08"
Weight: 126 lb
Talent: Mononoke
Grade/Year: Year 3
Personality:
Reticent for the most part, but polite because that is the way he's been taught to speak. Now that he has been thrust into an unfamiliar world, he is easily startled due to his sometimes constant unease, and though he finds most humans distasteful and disrespectful of old ways, he means well and houses a gentle soul mellowed by years living with his guardian. Dutiful and uncomplaining, he holds a childlike ignorance of the ways of the modern world. As such, he may come off as curious and blunt as he struggles to understand why things are the way they are now. He's a brave boy, a forest boy; always trying to stand strong despite the troubles blown his way, and though he may be slow to anger, its blaze takes just as long to cool should it be sparked.
History:
For a long time, there is only Mugen, Yuuko, and the green of the trees. They are relics of an era long gone, left behind by the ever-changing tides of the present. With only Yuuko and the wildlife to guide him, Mugen lives, hidden in the Sea of Trees.
Yuuko says she is a goze. Her songs are beautiful, even more so when accompanied by her skillful shamisen playing, but in exchange for her repertoire of stories and her beautiful voice, she is blind. Despite this, she has managed to take care of and raise the child she had found. She thinks he might be a yurei taken physical form, so she teaches him her music and her values to soothe his angry spirit. But she also teaches him to avoid people. Having been scorned for her old ways and her blindness, Yuuko, beautiful as she is, is wary of the people beyond the safety of the forest. Even without her to tell him, Mugen too grows wary of humans. They are destructive, littering the forest with their trash and their corpses, heavy steps disrupting the flow of wildlife and destroying plants.
Mugen learns. He learns the stories and the songs and the shamisen, and once he is old enough to walk and feed himself, he assists his guardian as best as he can. He is a child of the forest, and it welcomes him into its fold, teaching him how to survive. Staying true to Yuuko's teachings, he avoids the tourists and people who traipse the forest, but the odd sighting of him leads to stories. Aokigahara is known for its historic association with Japanese mythology, and unbeknownst to him, Mugen quickly gains the name of yokai and mononoke. People flock to the forest for the chance to see him, though he is not aware of this and remains ignorant.
Yuuko eventually passes from old age, and alone, Mugen continues to live following the forest's ways. He dances for the trees, listens to the wind, and sometimes goes to the land's end to see the blue of the unobstructed sky. And above all, he sings, voice ringing clear though the trees to break the silence. There is a song for the sun, and a song for the rain, songs of prayer and songs that tell tales. He can no longer duet some songs now that Yuuko is gone, but he practices her parts, voice always changing, sometimes masculine and other times feminine.
And then the day comes when he is discovered, and though he struggles and he fights, he is taken away. Only the forest can calm him now that Yuuko is gone, but the humans refuse to let him stay. "You cannot live here," they tell him, but Mugen has already done so since the day he first opened his eyes. He is stuffed into a school and a world he does not belong in, a world of cold concrete and sharp corners and towers that claw at the sky. Slowly, he begins to realize that perhaps he can never belong. His ways are too different, and his beliefs too "strange".
There is no place for him here.
