Irene sat alone at a table, tinkering with another mechanical creation of hers. She had left Amadeus to his own tinkering elsewhere, preferring the isolation and quiet provided by the restaurant at the moment. The waiters were yet another impressive piece of technology, in addition to the artificial intelligence and the elevator of unusual function. For the most part, she cared little for their new surroundings, despite improving upon their previous one, but the robots remained of interest. Her focus at the moment was on the wind-up robot she held in her hand.
The wind-up robot required human input to function, but could the same be said of the artificial intelligence and the robots? While input was required in the sense of creating them to begin with, artificial intelligence was designed to function by itself, despite receiving input being one of its primary functions in many cases. The same could be said for the mechanical waiters, if the technology was sufficiently advanced, even though service was their prime directive. It was indeed possible for them to function in their processes without human input, but would there be any reason for said function if the function's purpose could not be accomplished? Function could possibly continue long after any of them ceased to exist, unlike in the case of the humble wind-up toy.
Having made the necessary adjustments and put everything back where it belonged, Irene put the robot to work. She put the key in its back, wound it, then placed the robot on the table gently. It walked slowly across the surface of the table, as was common for the design, but an adjustment had been made, and the prototype's arms moved as it walked. It stopped after a moment, and she nodded. The prototype had been successful in its design, and would have to be displayed to the customers once doing so was an option again. For the time, it was another small victory.

A new area. The same old people. Some better than others, for sure.
Caelie stood by the doorway between the kitchen and the restaurant, holding a bundle of purple grapes as she eyed Irene. Briefly, memories of their first introduction came back. What was but a short period of passing time felt now like ages back - a testament to... unique experiences far and wide. She watched as the girl tinkered with her robot pet, noting its peculiar charm. A part of her understood now why Irene was selected for this show, why her shop deserved the business it had. No doubt a part of that fame came from the personality behind the creator of these toys, or perhaps the lack of? After all, Irene was one of the most stoic people Caelie had the pleasure of interacting with. And that's even taking into account stone faced Jack, rumored to have been on the receiving end of a fork without batting even an eyelid. Died of a heart attack though. Hm.
Walking over to Irene's table, Caelie gave her a pleasant smile. "Hello," she spoke, polite. "Would you mind if I record your robot? Maybe you could talk about how he was built, if you don't mind divulging such information."

Irene looked up from her creation at the visitor. The mystery novelist, a welcome presence, one whose presence had changed in significance from their arrival in the competition. While normally a pastime for a mind craving a challenge, scenarios common in them had become all too real during their stay. If one talented in creating such scenarios were to put their mind toward evil, the results would be negative on all ends. However, such talents could be useful in deconstructing the crimes of others. The mystery novelist profited off the deaths of others, despite their fictional nature. It would simply be a matter of trusting the talented individuals not to waste their skills through taking another's life. Despite their circumstances, she was nonetheless a welcome presence.
"Hello, Miss Ariane." Irene nodded. "It is of no consequence. You may do as you wish. The mechanical creation is a simple mechanism of interlocking gears. A winding mechanism is used to create movement rather than any source of fuel. The mechanism is placed within the casing. Adjustments are made. Decorations are placed. Quality is assured. If you have further questions, you may ask them."

[attr="class","box2"] Caelie gave Irene a pleasant smile. She was thankful for this warm welcome, if it could even be labelled as such. Was it a cold one? Definitely not. Lukewarm, impassive and even neutral had negative connotations attached too, and so warm it shall be.
What she didn’t expect however was the pace in which Irene begun to talk about her creation. Quickly setting the grape down on the table – in a less gentle manner than she’d have hoped – Caelie quickly slipped out her phone, navigated to the camera application and started a recording. After those frantic few seconds, she pulled out a chair and sat down, positioning her phone vertically on the table with both hands. Through the lens, Caelie watched Irene go through quick series of explanations, brief and concise.
At the Toymaker’s ending query, Caelie recalled her list of questions – people specific - made some nights before, filed away in some compartment of her mind. There were a selection to choose from, and she started with one that served well enough as a starter.
“I’m glad you aren’t camera-shy, Karlsen. I’ve been meaning to arrange an interview for some time now,” she smiled. “Now if you don't mind, how would you describe your parental figures? The way you carry yourself, it’s fascinating. Charming too, in its own right.”

The mystery novelist desired an interview, which would be another new experience for Irene. Despite her shop's popularity and her accomplishments, it received little attention from the media. This was of no consequence; she would continue her craft regardless of whether it was being reported on. She was the best, and it was her duty to do so, regardless of any attention given to it, unless that attention proved to be an obstruction to her work. This interview would simply be a matter of learning, it appeared, which was a purpose she could respect. Her ability to create was limited at the moment, but as long as she remained productive, all was well.
"I suppose I am not, Miss Ariane. I will accept your interview." Irene gave a small nod. "My mother and father. They have clothing and presents delivered on a regular basis, as well as telephone correspondence. Their visits are infrequent. Mine are nonexistent. They do not interfere with my work. They are kind, but irrelevant." She paused. "I thank you for what I understand to be a compliment."

[attr="class","box2"] “They are kind, but irrelevant.”
Even if Caelie was an awfully hypocritical judge, that didn’t seem like the type of answer normally expected of a teenage child. But then again, none of them were exactly normal, were they? The occupancy of skeletons in their closets probably numbered greater than the average – she had hoped for this to be true, for what fun is a person who hadn’t been broken in one way or another? In more than simply one – Valentina was a prime example.
A delusional serial killer in their midst… you couldn’t make this up.
Caelie smiled back with a nod.
“It was definitely a compliment, and I’m pleased it was taken as such,” she said. “Do you have any questions for me? If not, then perhaps we could continue with, hm, your thoughts on everything that had happened? Theories, I suppose, on how the laws of biology and physics were so easily broken.”

Irene sat silent for a moment, after which it might have seemed she was asleep, before she spoke again, dispelling any doubt. "Your question is incorrect in a sense, Miss Ariane. I do not have theories on these events. Theories require significant amounts of evidence. Evidence which remains unavailable at present. I have no hypotheses either. One must not attempt to reach a conclusion without proper evidence. It is a known principle in the rules of many detectives. You know of this, I am sure. Therefore, I offer no theories. These events are unusual. There is much to be learned. These are my present thoughts on the matters."
"There are several questions I wish to ask. Some are of a more serious nature. If you do not object, I will proceed with them. Until you have decided, I will ask others." A pause. "May you explain to me what enjoyment there is to be found in the ocean? I remain unenlightened on it, as with high temperatures."
