As there existed a heaven, there existed a hell, both in religious beliefs and in their current prison. As there existed a beginning, there must also exist an end, as all things came to an end. However, as with hell and heaven, there also existed a purgatory, a middle path. If not beginning or end, then stagnation. No end to their imprisonment or the bear's game, merely a constant existence of this state, as with time and existence itself. Impossible with a regular human lifespan, as all were certain to perish in time, yet the fate of a certain aromatherapist called into question these conditions and, indeed, the very conditions of life and death itself. Was there not also a middle path in that deemed "undead", existing in Victorian novels and modern film? Some had attempted experiments on it, certainly, but the existence of this life would most likely not prove ideal for the one experiencing this state, a state which neither the aromatherapist or the old master had expressed complaints of. Their state was not one of "unlife", but of life in some form, however corrupted. A false creation by an arrogant mind, one that could be deemed unholy, insulting, perverse.
Precision. Promptness. Professionalism. Precision. Her ideals in her work. Progress. Scientific advance was, of course, a form of progress, yet scientific advance for the sake of resurrection, of immortality, of returning to life those deceased, was a contradiction. Elements of the past, superseded by the future, now recalled by that which had taken its place. Stagnation. Another would replace her, as she had her master, and it would remain a constant, until all previous masters existed at once, brought back to life, preventing further advance in technique and design. In the name of her ideals, there were matters to discuss, and discuss them they would, her and her friend.
"...Ms. Otsuka." Irene uttered, something of a smile dwelling on her face.

After the events of the previous case, there was no need to do the challenges to make it to Heaven's Gate. Regardless, Mayumi didn't care for the luxuries this place had to offer, after all they were still made by whoever's running this thing. Besides, heaven and hell don't exist.

Another perspective may prove helpful. If these terms are agreeable, then I shall proceed." Irene gave a brief pause for any objections, then continued.
"You are well-versed in the usage of computers, I am sure. New devices are released to the market annually, much improved from that of the previous year's. Nonetheless, some continue to make use of those previous computers. The devices continue to function optimally for a time, and so there is no sense in seeking a replacement at the moment. However, further functions may be required. This computer may cease to function. An improved replacement is put into place. In turn, the replacement shall experience the same cycle. This is a universal law, is it not?"

"Very well. In the same manner as with these computers, all things experience this universal cycle. A novel regarded fondly by the public and considered as a classic may be forgotten in time as another takes its place. This successor will have the advantage in having learned from those shortcomings of the previous, and having further information to draw from. The same may be said of myself and my master. My master was formerly the best in his field. His eyeglasses were misplaced. They had been left in his workshop the previous evening. In entering work for the morning, a creation discarded the day previous and forgotten on the floor had been placed in his path, upon the stairway. He had made a mistake. It proved fatal. I reported the incident to the authorities upon discovery." Irene didn't pause once to think in her description of the incident, having remembered everything exactly as it happened, and sounding almost like a theme park animatronic as she talked about it.
"...An addendum. I will be surpassed at some point. Another will take my place. It is a universal law, but I intend to remain the best to the best of my ability. I am certain the same can be said of yourself. You display considerable skill in your task, Ms. Otsuka. The reason I have called you here is a question on the scenario I have spoken of."
"Is this cycle of succession a just one?"

Mayumi had thought about this scenario numerous times in the past, but never had the chance to speak up about it up until now. She looked down at Irene and folded her arms.
"I'd have to say it varies between person. Let's say that there's a corrupt president and a vice president who's even worse of a person than the one before. The president eventually gets assassinated and the vice president fills his role, and the country goes to deeper shit because of his vile leadership. Like you said, it also applies to the skills of the individual, not just how they present themselves. Not to mention, both the successor and the predecessor could be very similar in either aspect. All in all, it can be just in some ways, while in others it isn't. To me, the cycle itself is a depressing one, but in some ways it works." | [attr="class","goodness"] ✉ @nobody ✎ 0000 words |

"...I have improved upon my predecessor. His methods and techniques have been further developed in my work. He was of a past generation. Fixed in his ways. A replacement was required. His obsolescence led to his demise. This is the universal law at work. It is a just one."

She faintly smiled at Irene and pushing up the bridge of her glasses. Mayumi didn't agree that he was obsolete, as she valued all human life, but she didn't want to ruin the moment.
