The obvious response to this was "I don't think monokuma is really interested in being fair, mariko" but whatever. She didn't ask for much, she really didn't. But she was so damn tired of feeling...useless, feeling naked in a manner of speaking. All she wanted was a video camera to hold in her hands, it didn't even have to be a good one! Cameras just had a calming effect on the young girl, and for whatever reason it removed all timidness and apprehension that normally plagued the young woman. Behind a camera, Mariko could pretend she was Superman. Afraid of nothing, daunted by nothing. Danger bounces right off and doesn't even leave a dent. Behind a camera, she could pretend that for once in her life, she wasn't a complete and total coward. A failure. It was the only thing she had to hold on to I suck at writing intros, I'm sorry. let me know if you need more to go on, and I can try and add more[/ul]

nobody ever made you dig deeper Dear Diary,
I’m going to kill today. I need to get out and these feels are killing me.
Root
Root laughed as he wrote the entry in the notebook. If anyone found it he’d be in trouble, but it wasn’t like he wouldn’t have fun with it. After all, he was too smart to leave such a blatant clue. Not that he was going to kill either way. He’d come to the conclusion that she wouldn’t want him to kill, no matter what. She was still alive. It was like Schrödinger’s cat. She was alive and dead at the same time until he got out. And if it turned out to be true, then he’d rather wait here forever and believe that there was a chance she was alive then to ever know for a fact she was dead. In a way, he wanted to stay in these god forsaken theme park forever.
However, as he threw the ‘diary’ notebook into a corner of his room, he realized that he needed more notebooks. Of course, he’d visited the supply store already and grabbed handfuls of notebooks, but his wall was already filled with notes from at least ten notebooks that were discarded in another corner of his room. The ‘diary’ was just a past time he had adopted to distract himself. It didn’t help that when he got started on a problem he would go days without food or drink, and sometimes would end up passed out and his mother had nursed him back to health more than a couple times, and she did too. But here he had no one and he had to distract himself so he didn’t wind up killing himself. So, he started the ‘diary’ where he would write all sorts of entries. He was planning on doing one about a giant rainbow tiger and fighting it, but for now his dark humor would suffice.
Root kicked himself up from his bed and walked out of his room, making his way through the park to the supply store. Of course, he’d already gotten fifteen notebooks and several pencils (after all, pens were the bane of his existence), usually mechanical so he didn’t have to sharpen them, but he needed more. Hopefully someone wouldn’t look up his log of what he took and ask him why needed so many notebooks. Of course, he could just show his wall full of papers, and papers scattered all around his room. He just preferred not to be questioned about such things. He preferred not to be questioned at all.
Root ducked his head as he entered the supply store, not realizing he wasn’t alone and he made his way to the notebooks where he picked up a handful before looking up. Of course it was stupid to enter a building without knowing who was there, especially with the bear trying to get them to kill each other, and with his reputation that he was sure he already had or would soon have of being a jerk. Ah well, if someone tried to kill him, he wouldn’t let them. Either way, when Root saw that Mariko was in the supply store, he carefully set a couple of the notebooks down so it appeared he wasn’t getting an abnormal number.
However, something was wrong, he could tell. Something had upset her. He cursed himself for caring, but he couldn’t help it. “Are you looking for something in particular?” Maybe he could help her find it, or whatever it took to make her smile, because apparently that mattered to him. Ha. Maybe he should study his own brain, it would probably be fascinating to explore what made him think the thoughts he thought.

“Are you looking for something in particular?”
She'd like to say she kept her composure, that she was totally unsurprised at one of her sixteen fellow teenagers also wanting to check out the supply store, as was their right and simply happened to stumble upon the green haired girl by chance. That just for one second, a single goddamned second she didn't react like a total coward and make a fool out of herself just because some spoke to her like human beings do. This is all what she wished happened.
The reality was that when the older boy spoke, Mariko flinched like he was about to strike, and knocked a bin right off of the shelves she had been searching through.
Smooth, Mariko.
Embarrassed beyond belief, Mariko quickly bent down to retrieve the scattered goods to buy herself a little breathing time,so her nerves could be collected.God, why did she have ti be such an idiot? As the green haired girl kicked herself mentally, she couldn't help but let her mind wander. This was...the scientist, right? Alexander, or something like that. He had seemed kind of scary when he was talking to the others, but he had smiled at her when they introduced themselves, so he couldn't be all mean, r..right? He wasn't gonna hurt her or anything. Hopefully.
"O..Oh, M-m-mister Root. Hello. Uhmmm.." Oh God, what can she say here to not seem lame. If she came out and just said, "I was looking for a video camera in a supply store", would that be stupid? would he hate her or write her off as just another simpleton? These are the kind of things Mariko thinks above, and as she brushes strands of long green hair away from her eyes, she can't help but pause just for a moment to nervously bite the sleeve of her purple hoodie.
"S-s-s-sorry, you startled me a bit. What are you doing here, mister Root?"
Ah, good old fashioned deflection. gotta love it.

nobody ever made you dig deeper There were many things that Root expected when he had said something. Maybe something like ‘shove off’ or ‘mind your own business’ or simply ignoring his words, since he didn’t actually know the director nearly at all, and he tended to cause a reaction like that out of most people. He was used to it. However, the reaction he got was something he didn’t expect even if he really should have. Root stared for a moment as his quick brain tried to keep up with the events, sluggish and completely distracted. He needed to clear his head of whatever this fog was that caused him to be so slow right now.
Blinking a couple times, Root hurried to Mariko’s side. Of course, he was a jerk, but he was also a gentleman. His mother taught him right. Of course he would normally be calling them an idiot while he helped pick up their mess, but that was beside the point. Instead, he reached to help pick up the fallen supplies with a smile on his face and a laugh to accompany it. “Careful, tiger. You know, you should watch where you flinch. Wouldn’t want you to get hurt.” ’No need for everyone to freak out thinking someone killed you. And then they would blame me because I was here,’ Root added in his head.
Then, he stood up when everything was picked up, and offered his hand to her as he regarded her question. Deflection. There was something she was worried about telling him. His need, his thirst for knowledge kicked in and now he needed to know. It was bad enough that he didn’t know whether she was alive or not, whether those videos were real or not, he had to at least gain this knowledge. But how to go about it?
“Notebooks,” Root lifted up the couple of notebooks in his hand, “So I can give people paper cuts, the ultimate torture.” Now that he revealed that, now he could expect the same from her. If another direct question didn’t work, then he would have to figure out something sneakier, because he was no fixated on why she was here and why she looked the way she did when he first noticed her. “What about you?”

"I'm sorry. It's just..."She paused, trying to find the right words to describe her state of mind. What she had seen on that video the bear had shown them, sisters, her mother, everyone she was close to in that state they were videoed in, and on top of that they were told to kill each other if they wanted to know if their loved ones were even still alive. While she wouldn't be unreasonable to be as jumpy as she was, the green haired girl couldn't help but hang her head in shame, staring down at the ground, ashamed that she was such a disappointment. "I'm just really sorry."Taking Root's hand as he offered it to help her up, Mariko's attention was drawn for the first time to the notebooks he had in his hand. Right, that was a dumb question after all. Alexander was the super high school level scientist, he had said so when they had all met at the fountain so it wasn't unreasonable to think he would need something to jot down notes with. With her question answered, turnabout being fair play as it is, the director can't help but again bite the cuff of one sleeve as she tried to get a hold of her nerves. "Well....promise you won't laugh, okay?"Oh god, why had she said that. Now she had to be scared that he'd laugh right in her face and call her a moron for wishing for stupid things. Blushing (Again. her face will stay that color one day) from the embarrassment of the completely made up scenario, Mariko cuts her eyes off to the side where tins of junk had yet to be rifled through. "I know it was dumb to hope. It was unreasonable to even expect to find something in here, but still...I was.." a slight pause only to once again brush green bangs away from her eyes before soldering on "I was looking for a video camera. Not a fancy one or anything, but just somethin to calm my nerves. Something that would..."Another pause, a small sigh and when she speaks again it's like a mouse is speaking, afraid of the reaction she will incur "Something that would keep me from acting like such a coward."[/ul]

nobody ever made you dig deeper Root was many things but a total jerk he was not. Especially when it came to cute director girls who acted so innocent… and as far as Root could tell were just as innocent as they were acting, unlike a certain flower maiden roaming around. Despite his vast intellect he lacked people skills, and he really didn’t care what most people thought of him, unless he liked them. And even then he was sure people would hate him regardless. There had been only two people in his life who had ever liked him. And in his life he had only liked two people. Now he had to change that to three, seeing as he seemed to like the green haired girl in front of him. That probably explained the sluggishness he was feeling in thought, as his thought processing space was all being taken up by subconscious and conscious thought focused on this girl.
When she apologized Root’s smile fell slightly. The whole environment was stressful, and he knew that the strain on some people was much greater, especially when he bottled it up and it was released all at once when he was alone, since he couldn’t let anyone see that side of him. It would completely ruin his reputation, and stupid people would start to actually like him and distract him from his work, when he really needed to focus on how he could end up time travelling if he managed to create a black hole, which would take the energy to compress something past the neutron degeneracy factor and–
“Don’t worry about it. As long as you’re not hurt, then it doesn’t matter.” Root looked to the notebooks in his hand, feeling guilty that he was hiding the fact he had come for many more, though for some reason he actually cared if she thought it was weird that he used so many notebooks so quickly. Of course, once he established the ground work he would slow down on his notebook consumption, needing all the same information he had written down in his room back at home.
As Mariko explained why she was at the supply store, Root listened, and stared for a moment at her. A camera. An image of a camera and a young laughing girl giggling that she was recording him, and him laughing and giving a lesson on modern physics flashed through his head, distracting him for just one moment.
"Something that would keep me from acting like such a coward."
Instead of laughing back a sarcastic or funny comment, Root’s face hardened with seriousness and he looked to the bins that had been left unsearched as of right now. “Then its settled. I’ll help you look. If we can’t find anything, then I’ll build you a camera myself.”

Ah, he was so nice. Normally this would have made Mariko happy, that she could have a nice conversation with a classmate who wasn't mean to her, or didn't look down on her for being quiet or timid or whatever. And yet somehow all she could do was stare at the ground, the burning sting of saltwater threatening to escape from her eyes. It made no sense, she had no real reason to cry. And yet, as she stood here in the supply store with someone who had been nothing but nice to her in the short time they had known each other, here she was on the verge of tears. Why did she have to be so pathetic all the time? She hated this part of herself. She wanted so desperately to be more confident, she wanted to be happyer, to be someone who could have a normal every day conversation with someone, boy or girl that didn't end with her stammering like a fool every time she was without a camera in her hands. “Then its settled. I’ll help you look. If we can’t find anything, then I’ll build you a camera myself.”"Huh?"He'd what? Caught in mid mope about how useless she was, it was completely fair to say that was not anything like she expected him to say. Quickly wiping unshed tears away from her eyes with the sleeve of her purple jacket, the green haired girl looked quizzicly at the scientist who had just offered to go out of his way to help the director of his own volition. The obvious question of "why" went unasked, because the next time the green haired girl speaks all she can meek out is "You'd...you'd do that, for me?"Like she didn't really believe anyone would do something so nice for a timid girl like her who seemed to have no redeeming qualities. nobody ever made you dig deeper Wait. Was she… crying? Oh God, was it something he said? Shit. He was a jerk without even trying. That was Root in a nutshell. He couldn’t even be nice to the people he wanted to be nice to, he was a jerk without even trying. Ah well, he probably ruined this relationship like he always ruined everything. The only people who ever liked him had been family, and that was because they had to stand him because he was family. Even his father had once said that he couldn’t stand him, and that the only reason he stuck around was because he had to and had an obligation to him. While he knew the rest of his family felt the same, they pretended that it was otherwise. In the end, he was useless. The only thing he could do was make strides in science and leave a better world for those he cared about, as payment for them putting up with him just so he wouldn’t feel alone, so he could feel like he had a purpose.
"You'd...you'd do that, for me?"
A look of confusion flashed across Root’s face, before forcing his face into a relaxed smile, a trained smile, a smile he was so used to putting on, even when he wasn’t really feeling it. However, as he comprehended her words, his smile became more genuine. Was that why she was crying? Because she couldn’t believe it? Could it really not be his fault? That he hadn’t said something that offended her and made her cry?
He patted her head, internally cursing himself for such a move, despite already doing it. “Of course.” He watched her for a moment, his smile growing and he laughed. “If it is a camera that will bring you confidence, I would gladly build you one.” Why. Why was he doing this? Maybe he should say. Then again, his reason of ‘well, you are incredibly cute and you’re also a director, and well, I like directors and I can’t help it but you make me want to smile when I look at you and I don’t even know you and…’ would probably make him look insane. Then again, he was a scientist. He might as well act like a mad scientist. “If we’re going to survive this place, then we all need confidence. I have my notes, my work, and... the thought of my sister to keep me confident. In the meantime, if you need confidence, I’ll share a bit of mine with you.”

Scrubbing her eyes a final time to erase any tears that threatened to form, when Mariko looks back up at Root she can't help but smile. It wasn't much of one, it was a shy smile that seemed to be embarrassed at her own reactions to the nice things Root had said to her so far, but it was also the first smile she had smiled since they had all awakened in this nightmare. Pressing her fingers together now, Mariko bows her head slightly to Root, something she had seen her mother and various other family members before her do time and time again when it came to dealing with the public. “It's kinda silly, I know. But a director, especially one like me is completely worthless without a camera in their hands. I've been this way since the day I received my first one.”When Mariko straightens up she's blushing slightly from sharing details of her past that Root probably had no interest in hearing, but she's also smiling brighter, a true genuine smile for the first time in what seemed like a very long time. “So thank you, Mister Root. Sorry, but I'll be relying on you for a short while, if that's okay.”Alexander Root [/ul]

nobody ever made you dig deeper There had been so few people who Root ever cared about, mostly because few people had ever cared for him. Then again, it wasn’t like he made it easy to like him. He didn’t interact with people very often. Even here in Monoworld, he preferred to lock himself up in his room. Occasionally he would go to the morning meetings that everyone was supposed to go to, and occasionally he would explore the park, but he preferred solitude. After all, everyone distracted him from his work, for last person he cared about. There were dangers in being distracted, and it wasn’t just losing a solution. He could always find the solution again.
However, distractions outside of his work were good. They were refreshing, especially when they were around people who would argue with him, who would hate him. While he was a scientist himself, he always seemed to dislike all others who worked in similar fields, and instead liked those in the arts, and he knew exactly why. It was the people he grew up with. The way he had grown up had taught him to value the arts, the type of thing he never was good at, but also to accept himself the way he was and not change himself for the approval of others. Otherwise he’d be a mediocre writer or actor or some other artsy thing, and he wouldn’t be happy.
Despite his rude outward appearance, there were those he didn’t feel the need to tease or argue or pity because of their level of intelligence in matters such as science. As his mother would tell him, everyone had a different type of intelligence, though he still had a… superiority problem when it came to dealing with people. Well, it wasn’t like that was the most important thing he was working on right now. That lesson would have to wait to be absorbed until he discovered the universe through science. And as it so happened, Mariko was one of those he didn’t feel like he should be rude to.
“As long as you need me,” Root replied, “But, you know, you’re not completely worthless without a camera. You’ve made me smile. And that’s worth a lot. At least to me.” He made sure to smile his biggest smiled when he said this. He paused for a short moment, debating on his next words. “Don’t worry, as long as I’m here, I’ll be there if you need a little extra confidence boost.” Internally, he sighed, seeing as he didn’t reveal anything, as his mind wanted to reveal. Not yet. Maybe not ever. He hadn’t ever told anyone about that. Why he was fighting, in the grand scheme of things, and it was more than just the last person he cared about.
