i'd like to know why you persist.
Standing tall and winding in the center of the room is the Stairwell. Despite the old-fashioned feel of the house, this particular spot feels a bit different. Tall black rods create a large circle up through a hole in the ceiling, and dark wooden planks have been affixed to them in such a manner that they almost appear to float. You may be afraid to step on them, but upon trying them, they’re as solid as can be. You can slip through the black bars and slide your way into the middle of the Stairwell. It’s cramped and a bit bright...which allows you to notice the small LEDs burrowed into the rods, subtly illuminating the steps. Well, at least it’s private.
The Stairwell is surrounded by a few high tables, each one adorned with a small potted fern, and a terracotta bowl of wrapped white mints. God, even the wrapping is special; it matches the pattern on the carpet. Popping one in your mouth, it crushes easily into a fresh-tasting powder.
If you happen to climb the stairs to the second floor, the rods come up to about your waist, where they resolve themselves into a circular banister. It doesn’t really seem like it would prevent anything but the clumsiest of accidents, though...
