For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root had left Mariko on her own at the fountain when the motive was first announced. He already felt bad about it, but he didn't want to have to discuss this whole 'don't kill anyone, even this traitor guy because killing is wrong' right now. He really just wanted to think about this whole situation on his own, without someone to tell him he shouldn't, or make him feel guilty for even thinking about it. She should be happy he was working so hard to get her out of here. He was just... too scared to risk his own life to get her out. Either that or getting both of them out meant everyone else died, and while he didn't want to admit it, he had grown at least a bit closer to Willow (your first kiss - that you remember - would do that to you), and Alexia made him face a terrible fear even if he was never going to get over it. At least he was able to show her that she couldn't use that against him, even while his life flashed before his eyes when he fell into the water. In the end, he managed to get himself out, and that was a big deal.
Instead of taking Mariko, because of this fact, he took Iocus to go looking and exploring the new area. Alexander Root was very distraught at this moment as he continued to debate in his head, and how he felt like he was being selfish for not wanting to kill someone. Because if he did, he could get her out, but if he did, he could also end up dying for trying and in the end not be there to protect her. This traitor from the hope foundation or whatever they were was the best way, in Root's opinion and he just needed to figure out who it was, and he would deal with the guilt of killing someone, because it was worth it to get Mariko out. Then he could be a coward and still get her out, because he lacked confidence enough to kill someone in cold blood just to get himself and her out of here, and thus end up killing everyone else in the process.
With Iocus in tow, Root made his way to the Sheriff's Office, making no conversation at this point, and mostly grunts of frustration when the locked safes didn't open and they required a password. He moved on and rifled through the pages on the desk, sitting down and placing his feet on the desk itself as he began to read through the papers he had found.

I noticed Root was visibly agitated for some reason. He was moving with force, almost angrily. I had seen Root angry before, but it didn't seem like it was the case this time.
I put on my smile.
"Heya pard'na! Wat ya doin' over yonder?"
I saw he was trying to get into the safes. Maybe he was trying to figure out a clue as to how to open them or something.
"Aaaggghhh pshh"
I spat on the ground mid thought because that is what Cowboys do. Maybe he was looking to see if the papers had some sort of information as to where we were or something along those lines. The scientist was not a person who I hung out with very frequently. He was normally either too busy writing notes in notebook, or he was studying biology and the human body with the film director. So busy in fact, he almost always forgot to eat. If it wasn't for the director, he could have died by now. She eats the share of several people anyways.
Either way, he was upset about something. It could be our situation, it could be womanly problems, it could be manly problems? It was hard to tell with him. He only really ever speaks when he wants. Hopefully he will not just ignore me and keep reading the papers. I will make him laugh even if it kills me.
I knock on wood.
"Ya tryin' ta get in dem safety boxes?"

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root went through the various papers he had found in the desk, his expression hardening. On the papers were exeuctions, like that of Daisuke and Nana's, except… these were not for anyone he knew. There were names he didn't recognize, and executions that seemed to be geared towards these other people. It only kept arguing to him that he couldn't kill someone. He'd be discovered, he knew. Unless it was this traitor Monokuma wanted them to kill, the one who almost set them free if they had just not voted (or well, it would've saved them from being executed like in these plans at least). He didn't care about this guy, and it was the safest way to get Mariko out without going through something like these papers detailed.
"Oh no, not at all," Root said quickly looking up from the papers to Iocus, who he had forgotten he'd grabbed to follow him, "I know the combinations by heart, but I just wanted to fuck with you and make it look like I was struggling to open them." Root rolled his eyes and looked back at the papers he was reading. Iocus still really needed to work on his accent, but at least it wasn't that bad. He didn't know much about the comedian at all. They hadn't really hung out the whole time they were here. Better it stayed that way. If it came down to it, it'd be easier to kill him or vote him dead if he didn't know him well enough to care.
"Now, why don't you make yourself useful and look around? I'm sure someone with little intelligence has some sort of use," Root gritted his teeth and set the papers on the top of the desk, next to where his feet lay, "Unless your use is dying, then, well, make sure to leave note of who did it, unlike the Voice Actress." Root took out his journal and began to write out what he had found a sour look on his face. He was a coward, and he knew it. He couldn't risk his life for a chance to save Mariko's. He was too afraid of the consequences, of dying here, of dying in a horrific way and Mariko forced to watch it. The baNana smoothies had shaken her up, and he just didn't want to see her sad like that ever again, even if the execution had fascinated him. Daisuke's side splitting execution was bad enough and had even shaken him up though. He was so close to getting that camera finished for her… then at least he could see her smile and truly be happy even in this dark place.

Root must have sat on a stick or something when he sat down. He should really pull it out of his ass before his frown becomes permanent. Maybe he has ants in his pants? That must suck for him as well. He is going to have a bunch of small bites later...Whatever it is, he needs to cool of. Sucks for him that he is allergic to water, otherwise he could go for a swim. If he doesn't change that frown upside down he is going to get a raisin face and Mariko will dump him...
Oh! It must be Mariko..hold on, if you turned the frown upside down, does that imply that your whole face is flipped? I think that would mess your vision up, but then again, I think our eyes are already inverted so wouldn't that technically fix it? Anyways, Mariko might not dislike him that much if he has a raisin face, shes DOES like food a lot. She might not like his personality if he keeps that up. No girl can stand a buzz kill for that long. Maybe I will see if that's what is bugging him. I could give him advice on how to get women to like you.
I dropped my accent. I put on my smile.
"Hey Alex, is this about Mariko? Is she mad at you for not being a delicious chocolate cupcake again? You should just kiss her and make up already. If you keep this up she is going to dump you and find somebody else."
That should get him talking. It's super easy to get a reaction out of him. He doesn't seem to care for anything but Mariko. Not even science. It's creepy at times. It's like he is stalking her from up close. A beast picking it's pray. Like a fat guy, choosing what to add to his subway.
It doesn't really matter whether he replies or not now that I think about it. I walked towards the locks and started pressing random buttons. In the hopes that I would get a code right.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. When Iocus spoke, Root froze for a moment and his eyes lost focus on the journal in front of him. He clenched his jaw as the anger at his statements seethed below. He told himself to calm down. He didn't need to yell. He couldn't let this guy get under his skin. It took him a moment as he stared at nothing in particular. He slowly sat up, placing his feet on the ground and the journal on the desk where his feet were just moments ago. Root wasn't sure what this guy was up to, but it obviously wasn't 'not pissing Alexander Root off' because otherwise he wouldn't be saying what he was saying.
However, unlike his encounter with Taro, Root knew that he needed to be more careful. He had let a traitor know too much about his past, enough to destroy him emotionally. While others might not believe what Taro would say about it all, Taro knew what he had said, and just how to use it against him. He had a sneaking suspicion already when Taro was talking, just as Iocus had suggested in trial, a thought on everyone's mind, but he had been… in a heightened emotional state at the time and wasn't thinking clearly. No, he wouldn't get angry at Iocus. It was probably not the guy's goal, but Root couldn't be sure he wasn't another traitor.
"First of all," Root began, slowly relaxing back to where his feet were resting on the top of the desk again, journal in hand, "Mariko and I are not together. Second of all, I've never been a… 'delicious chocolate cupcake' nor has she been mad at me for not being one. And third of all, I doubt she would want me to kiss her." No matter how much he really did want to kiss her.

"ha" "HA" "HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAAHA"
I couldn't stop myself....
"HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
I didn't know Root was that funny...Did he seriously say Mariko didn't want o kiss him? Everybody in this place can see that they are heads over heals for each other? but they weren't even together? This was too funny! There is no way that wasn't true! He is either kidding with me or...
...that is kind of sad...
...It would be up to me to help them become a thing!
It took me a few seconds to calm down and become able to talk again.
I put on my smile.
"Alex, my friend, she likes you man! I don't know if it's you being in denial or you are just really stupid when it comes to these types of things! You seem like a smart guy so I assumed you knew already but it seems like you need the help of your good ol' pal Iocus!"
He might find it hard to believe because he only believes in science I think....but I am actually fairly good with the ladies. It's up to Root on whether he wants to take this golden opportunity to speak to the ladies man of the park! Because he sure as hell wasn't going to be the one who sleeps with guns, or the one who fists women, or the one who sleeps with woodland creatures, or the one who is too ugly, or the one who suffers from teenage angst...Oh! or anybody who is dead...Unless Root is into the stiffs....

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root's expression hardened as Iocus laughed at him. He seriously had no idea what the hell he had said that made him laugh so hard. He had simply stated facts. Root took a deep breath and allowed himself to not rise at the laughter. Instead, he waited until Iocus was done, and raised an eyebrow in annoyance, turning his head to look at the guy finally.
"Oh yeah, I should take advice from an idiot who makes a fool of himself for a living." Root scoffed. However, with his studies, he vaguely remembered hearing from his sister something about 'girls like funny guys'. Mariko didn't seem to show Iocus any affection, but it was still curious. As a scientist he would have to collect data and find out what the most logical reasoning behind the curious, vague remembrance of his sister's voice. Hmph. It could have just been his imagination too, imitating his sister. Or his sister could just be wrong. She wasn't… as smart as he was, but that wasn't her fault. If…
Quickly shoving that thought deep down where it belonged, where he didn't think about it, he took a deep breath and continued. "I am not stupid. I am highly intelligent, far more intelligent than anyone in Monoworld, in fact. I would have noticed if Mariko liked me." Then again. Willow and that passage he read about what Willow had said to him. Vague echoes of Willow's voice, and in turn the hallucination of his mother's voice, rang through his ears. "While true my knowledge of 'romance' or even the feelings of others is limited, due to their illogical nature. However, with my years of experience, I have been able to better view these… areas in a… social… setting, where I can recognize most acts of emotion, even if I don't fully understand why the emotions are the way they are. All of this is to say, I have seen nothing in Mariko to indicate her affection for me extends beyond mere friendship."

He seemed a little agitated. He is a man of science so I suppose he thinks being emotional is a weakness. A defect in human physiology.
He is wrong.
"You are wrong. The way you think of emotions is wrong. You might not understand that because you are denser than a black hole but you are wrong. Emotions don't make sense, but that's because they don't have to. Whatever you feel is what you feel. Sure, emotions are caused by chemicals in the brain, but those chemicals are triggered by certain stimuli. In your case, your brain releases love chemicals when you see Mariko. You feel as if you have known her forever. You love Mariko and if you could see inside of her brain, you could see the same chemical being released in her head when she sees you."
For some reason, Root didn't want to believe Mariko liked him back. I suppose it's just the perspective he has in his relationship with her. He is too close to her for him to see the bigger picture...Oh that gives me and idea!
"Hey Alex, let me ask you this. Let's say you have a microscope. If I pointed it at...lets say...gelatin, do you think you could figure it out by seeing it up close? You probably can't if you are seeing something that up close. But if you were farther away, you could tell right? Now, lets say you are close to Mariko like the gelatin. You might not be able to see it all, but to the rest of us it is obvious how you feel about each other because we can see it from farther away."
This was no time for jokes. The ship was sailing and it was heading straight for an iceberg. Wait! No! They already broke the ice!!

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Wrong? Him? This comedian had the gall to say that he, Alexander Root, was wrong? Sure, he might not understand emotions as easily as other more concrete things in this universe, and even more the abstract ideas such as the multidimensional world. However, being called wrong was one the of the things he hated the most, and he would work hard to disprove Iocus. Iocus was the one who had to be wrong, because… because he worked so hard to not be wrong. He hated when people didn't trust him when it came to him understanding things. He knew so many things. He knew so much, and yet he knew that he knew very little when it came to everything in the universe, though he knew so much more the others. He was having a slight internal crisis of needing to be right, else how could he ever trust himself with anything?
"It depends on the microscope's magnification. If it is far enough out, where one can see, oh a couple hundred cells, I could at least be able to make an educated guess based on the structure assuming a homogenous structure such as gelatin," Root quickly as to support himself in the discussion, "However, even if one can only see a cell or two, as the most powerful optical microscopes can, I would still be able to tell many qualities of at least that section. If one compares this as you do to a relationship, then I would be able to tell at least some sort of affection towards me. While Mariko is kind to me, she is kind to everyone. It is not unusual for her to be kind to another."
He was talking quickly, not worrying if Iocus actually heard, though he did wish for the guy to listen to him. At least then it would help offset the emotions enacted by Iocus using the word 'wrong' towards him. He hated being wrong. He couldn't be wrong. He wasn't wrong. That's why he was happy he got to forget the majority of the trials they had gone through, because he was wrong a lot in them. And he hated it. So very much. "Now while you are correct about the brain releasing drugs due to external stimuli, nature in itself is logical, therefore emotions must have some sort of logical pathway to follow. Such as if I were to insult you or someone you cared about, most of the time anger would occur in you. However, much like the universe, the human mind is a complicated thing and one must take in all factors within a life in order to fully understand. With sufficient knowledge in one's life, one can then extrapolate a system of stimuli to trigger specific emotions. Regarding Mariko, I cannot fathom what sort of tragedy must have occurred in Mariko's life to have such emotions triggered when around a, as you would call it, killjoy, buzzkill, lame, boring asshole like I am."

"I mean, you ARE all of those things, but that doesn't mean a girl can't like that. There are tons of girls out there in the world, some prefer the bad boys, some prefer the good boys. In her case, she is into assholes. Not literal ones...although maybe she is? Who knows...That is up to you to find out I suppose... Anyways! She is into you man! This things ARE illogical. They make no sense at all! That is human nature in a nutshell, we are illogical creatures by design. We don't have to make sense, we just are."
I hope Alex stretched before doing all those mental gymnastics. Boy oh boy does he like to twist words! He is like a pretzel machine for words! It was my duty as his best friend to help him out!
"Ok Alex, lets assume you are not wrong for a second, which you are, but lets just assume for a second that you are not. What is the harm in telling her how you feel? She rejects you? If she doesn't like you already, then that was the outcome to begin with. If she likes you, well then, you can start making babies right away. It's not like we have anything else to do on this park anyways."
Root was about to speak up but I decided to interrupt him before he got the chance.
"Let me ask you a few questions before you beginning lying to yourself. 1. How would you describe your feelings towards Mariko? 2. What type of relationship would YOU like to have with her? 3. Can you stop taking all of the notebooks for yourself? 4. Does Mariko talk to you differently when you are alone than when others are around? Like, does she call you by a different name or something?
These are my questions Alex, and I'm sure, as a scientist, you want to answer all questions."

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Iocus really didn't understand nature, Root thought to himself. He might be able to predict the emotions of people better than Root could, but he didn't really understand it. Nothing that Iocus was saying just about people in general Root accepted as fact because he couldn't. Everything had to have some logical explanation, and just because there wasn't one yet didn't mean that he would find the explanation eventually. "Nature tends towards equilibrium; Nature prefers order. Nature tries to correct chaos. And yet even in a chaotic state, everything in nature has a logic to it. Just because the brain is still a large mystery to me and the scientific community, does not mean there is not a logical path. Just because you don't see the logical path doesn't mean there isn't one. There is always logic, in everything." It was how he had led his life believing and that led to his discovery of a theory in the universe that thwarted String Theory and had been proven with ease, and no one could come up with anything that went against it. It was more firm than even Einstein's General Relativity, and just as important. With his theory of the universe, the theory of everything was closer than it had ever been before to completion. Normally a Nobel was awarded for life long achievements but this breakthrough was too revolutionary to pass up, they said. At least… at least his mom got to see him win it. And she had been so proud of him.
"To answer your questions…. One: I love her. Two: I want to be with her forever, but I would be happy with whatever relationship she wanted, romantic or otherwise. It doesn't matter what I want. Three: No. I need them. Four…" Actually now he had to think for a moment about the question. He remembered back to the aquarium, where they hugged and they were… close. "I gave her permission to call me by my first name. Something in which you should stop calling me. Only those I care about the most are allowed to call me by that name, for they are the ones who will not abuse it. To the point, yes, she calls me Alex, but only because I told her it was alright. Prior, she would call me Mister Root. It was actually quite adorable. Other than that, no, not really. She comes to me for comfort sometimes, but that is usually because I'm the closest one, or in the case of Saoirse's remains, the only one around."

Alex was not going to budge. He was too dumb when it came to this types of things. He was never going to acknowledge that Mariko loved him as well. It was time for plan B. I needed to speak his language for him to understand. It was time for..."the reveal"...
I put on my best serious face.
"Alex...Or should I call you...Mr. Root....I have something I need to confess to you...I come from the future. I was sent back to this time for a reason. That reason being your daughter, Boriko Root. More specifically, it was you who sent me from the future to correct a time anomaly. Apparently, a machine you had built detected an anomaly in your past that will lead to my present changing. Your daughter will cease to exist if nothing is done...I am your son-in-law in that future. You never mentioned this "game" in your life stories so I guessed this was what cause the anomaly. You need to get together with Boriko's mother or else she will be gone forever...I know this sounds crazy but you ACTUALLY achieved time travel in the future. Your wife was very proud."
I was planning on using this later but this seemed like the perfect occasion. I had planned this plan for the longest time. I had an answer for any question Root could potentially ask me!

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root blinked a couple times staring at Iocus after he told his story. Truthfully, he nearly laughed at the whole thing, if of course, they weren't in a very serious situation where they could die any time at the hands of a fellow student, even to the point Iocus could kill him right now if he wasn't careful, this whole joke possibly being a ruse to distract him and then end his life. However, he smiled, regardless of the risk, and chuckled. He stood up and crossed his arms.
"You're my son-in-law and you're from the future," Root began with a look of disbelief and it faded into one of amusement, "So tell me, my goal, for time travel, did I ever tell you? I surely told my… daughter Boriko," he stifled another chuckle, "At the very least why I want to time travel. So tell me, how did I do it? Why did I not go back in time myself? How did my wife, who I assume is Mariko, and I meet? Fall in love? Surely I did not approve of you and my daughter, given your… demeanor towards the dead. If I told you my life story, then tell me all about my past, what I told you before the, ah, anomaly. Do you have anything of your, ah, beloved who you traveled through time to save?" While Root was a rather serious person, he couldn't say he wasn't amused. After all the man before him was the ultimate comedian, so having an amusing story in this situation wasn't surprising.
"Finally, now, what is your ultimate goal to defeat the anomaly that is this game. What would happen if, say, one of the two of us died? I could easily go to the shooting range and off myself if I really wanted to," Root said, "Not that I would, but you're not doing a good job saving either of us from death." He had to hand it to him. He was smiling, and it was more than just a half smile like he usually did. The smile had spread across his whole face.

Root was skeptical as expected but he was hooked. Time to reel the Sea bASS in.
"I AM your son-in-law and you love me... for the most part. You never talked too much about your younger days to us. Pretty much everything you told us was from the time after you met Mrs. Root. However, you did mention that the reason to why you build the time machine was to save somebody. Boriko and I never figured it out but she had her guesses. As to why you sent me instead of yourself was to avoid a paradox. Your first choice was Boriko but your anomaly machine said she couldn't come or whatever. I don't know how your time machine works either. I am an entertainer, not a scientist."
I took a breath.
"Mrs. Root and yourself met in school. I think this is where the anomaly happens because we clearly are not in a school. Your story was the same as me and your daughter. We met at Hope's Peak Academy. She was extremely serious and shy all of the time but I was the only one who ever made her smile. Oh and I forgot to mention, Boriko's talent is a mixture of you and your wife. She is the Ultimate Documentalist. She makes movies about science and stuff. She had the genes for that you know? In my present, I was not insensitive either. Which reminds me, your machine doesn't work completely, it seems it messed up my brain for a while. I did not regain my senses until after we were not allowed to sleep. My guess is that the lack of sleep reset my brain somehow. Again, I'm not a scientist like you Mr. Root."
I took another breath. I was putting a lot of effort into this but the payoff seemed worth it.
"Unfortunately, I do not have anything from your daughter as proof. Your time machine only works for organic matter. You can't take clothes. When I arrived I had to find clothes. I had to steal clothes from a thrift shop truck so that I could get dressed. I thought I found some fancy clothes but surprise! They do not match! Turns out being color blind is not good for fashion sense! After that my memory fails me but I ended up here. I do not have a plan to help you out. All I can do is try. Your machine didn't say what the anomaly was. You sent me completely blind into the past so that I could figure out what was wrong. I am sorry for that but I am not able to help out a lot. Oh and the best proof I have for all of this is this. Have you ever heard of the Ultimate Comedian? I am world-class famous in my present. I bet you have never heard of me before. You haven't heard of me because I haven't even been born yet. I should be in about two years estimating from how old you are now."
That had to had done it! It just HAD to! I could give him more evidence if he wanted it, which he probably will but we shall see. That last part was a good bluff. I assumed he really hasn't heard of me. He looks like the type who wouldn't care about that kind of stuff. He would be too busy proving atoms are real or something to even pay attention to the comedy circle!

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Well, Root had to hand it to him, Iocus was smarter than he looked in order to construct an argument like he had. However, there was something very wrong with his whole story, and it was Root's job to set the guy right. It wasn't because he was stubborn looking for holes in the argument, because he just wouldn't believe it. If it was true, then his older self would tell Iocus something only he would know, something he hadn't told anyone else, and then use it as proof. All Iocus had was a nicely put together story, no proof at all. There was absolutely nothing that he said that could prove such a story. It was far-fetched, even though he was indeed working on time travel, and it almost gave him hope that he would one day actually achieve the goal he was so close to finishing. Everything that could be proof was conveniently disposed of in his story, except… there was always questions everyone should know if they were a part of his family.
"Fine. Let's say you're telling the truth. What's my sister's name? My mother's? My father's? Anyone in my entire family. My uncle? My aunt? My cousins? What did my parents do? Tell me. Tell me anything about my family." Surely there was something he'd be able to remember if his story were truly true. And his future self, well he would've known of his attitude, and given Iocus proof. Further subjective proof that Iocus was lying. Other than the fact that it was ridiculous that Iocus was his son-in-law and didn't seem to know anything about him, he still couldn't get over the fact that he wouldn't have done it himself, even though he was always planning to do it, and he wouldn't send Iocus to this time either way, but back to when his mother had died, back to when it all began, because it didn't matter at all anything else that happened after that point in time, it'd be all erased and reset with a new timeline.
He was going to stump him on this story, because he just couldn't believe one thing. One very important thing. The most absurd thing in his entire story. It wasn't that he was from the future or that he sent him from the future to stop some paradox, even though that was exactly, exactly what he wanted to do, but it was one thing that had to be wrong with Iocus's story. "You know, even if you managed to come up with some sort of argument that cannot be proven for any of my questions, there's still one thing that you failed to take into account. There's the fact that there is no one, not you, not Mariko, not anyone could ever love a man like me. Oh you say I'm too close to Mariko to see her feelings for me. When in reality, it doesn't matter how close I am. It's like seeing a tachyon particle. It's impossible because tachyons are imaginary, just like your story, just like the possibility that anyone could love me. Anyone who ever loved me has either died, or been damaged beyond repair. I'd never put anyone into that position ever again."
