Willow walks into the church to check the condition of the shrine. He intends on staying there to pray before making his rounds. This has been his routine almost since the south gate had been opened.

Instead of all that...Willow found a horrifying sight. Mariko Nakazawa, his friend's love, strapped to a cross dead. Willow wanted to call out, to scream, but he couldn't. The hope he had been trying to find...the plan he had made. It was all going to be too little too late for her.
Despair seeped into Willow as he grasped the implications of this. Root...poor Root. He had started to open his heart and now....this. The trickster fell to his knees. Could he have prevented this? Spared everyone this pain? Kept Mariko alive? He didn't know. What could have gone so wrong that this....was the conclusion?
He could only sit and look up in horror. Right now Root and the others were blissfully unaware of what had happened. And he wanted to keep them that way for a bit longer.
Willow couldn't bare to be the one plunging them into this despair. Not yet at least.

After checking everything else, Ignia decided to venture into the church. Little did she know that Willow was there as well.
And Mariko. Dead.
"Oh my fucking god.", she said, potentially startling the trickster. "This isn't fucking true. If Root sees this... Fuck." She sounded distraught.
"I can count on ya to stay here, right?", she spoke to Willow. "Maybe there's more in the places we haven't checked. I checked every place here. Don't go to the bank."
With these words she left him.
... ... ...
After a while, Ignia came back, dragging a bound and gagged Taro behind her. "We gotta make sure he can't escape. I still have a bad feeling 'bout all of this."
Taro should now be the third person to discover Mariko's body.

Taro looked upon the cross of Mariko in a wasted room.
"Well, it seems to me like someone decided to escape with someone in tow. Willow, you seemed the most likely. Did you kill Root's blow-up sex doll in order to pleasure yourself with Alexia outside of Monoworld?"
He was still gagged, but nevertheless Taro smirked at his comment.
He sat down in a prime location to see the face of Root when he enters. This will be enjoyable to watch.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. *** Assumption of a Body Announcement after Taro, as this is set a somewhat good time after Taro is deposited, if not, then I'll edit it ***
Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step.
The sound of his feet as they hit the ground rang in his ears, merely a whisper against the erratic rhythm his heart beat against his chest. The dull pounding in his ears was loud as Root's stomach churned with worry. He felt like he was going to throw up. He felt like he was going to pass out and fall over. He felt like he was about to die. But he knew he had to keep going. He had to keep going, keep going. He had to figure out if Ignia was lying. He had to prove that Ignia was lying. He had to. She couldn't be gone. Flashes of Mariko with her throat slit, cut into pieces, sitting in a chair like Nana was in the Nurse's Office, they appeared in his head, almost making him lose sight of where he was and where he was going.
He passed the fountain, and the sound of the moving water sounded over his feet for just a moment. His visions of Mariko's possible death kept coming, faster and faster, causing tears to sting in his eyes. He closed them for a moment freeing a tear from each eye as he pushed himself to move faster, aiming towards the new part in the park introduced with the new motives. The church. It was there. It was where Taro had wanted to meet Mariko. That was where Ignia had said that Mariko was, where she lay dead. She couldn't be gone. She couldn't be dead. What asshole would've killed her? She was the kindest person here. The only one who would do that was Taro. Root's eyes landed on the boy for just a split second before looking away from the tied up kid. Taro. Taro. He hurt her already. How could he have let this happen? He needed to prove, he had to prove Ignia wrong, the announcement hadn't been for Mariko, it was someone else, like Shabots or something. She couldn't be gone. He had just opened his heart up to her, and she couldn't be dead. She just couldn't die, not now. She couldn't be gone. She couldn't be gone. She couldn't be gone. If she was… no, he couldn't think like that. Ignia had killed Mugen or something, and she was trying to change the scene while he was gone, and Mariko was just fine. His dreams, his paranoia was just that. They were just dreams. It was just paranoia. They were going to be just fine. They would be able to love each other, hold each other, kiss each other, just be together and this was all just a bad dream. She was just fine.
Root burst through the doors of the church and his eyes fell upon Willow in the room. ¬Then his eyes slowly raised up to the cross where the green haired girl was tied. He stopped in his tracks as a defeated look crossed his face. His arms went slack and his knees felt weak, slowly giving away, causing him to fall to his knees in utter despair. This was a dream. This was a dream.
“I'm hungry.”
The first words she had spoken that he remembered. It was bittersweet remembering that, even though Root was sure he'd have forgotten it by now. The sandwiches he had brought had been slightly crushed when he ran to the church, and now they lay dropped on the floor. The tears that had started as he run increased their efforts to attempt to fall down his face.
"Oh, uh...I'm Mariko. Mariko Nakazawa. Hope's Peak called me the Ultimate Film Director. Uh...I'd like it if we got along. I mean, if..if that's okay."
That was the sentence he expected to remember. The one that had caught his attention, the one that made him look at the film director. She was adorable. He remembered her face back then, well, at least he thought he remembered her face, but it could be just his mind trying to reconstruct the scene. Either way, Root remembered it as his eyes burned the image of her on that cross into his memory forever.
“My name is Alexander Root. I want to make it abundantly clear, that it is not a pleasure to meet any of you morons. Well, you’re not all morons, I suppose. It’s nice to meet the non-morons here.”
Tears started to fall. He had smiled at her for the first time after he'd said that. Oh god the memories were causing him so much pain. His heart felt like it had been ripped out of his chest. He felt like he was going to die as his eyes rested on the dead body of the woman he loved. The crushing reality was facing him right now and he wanted to say it was a dream but he wasn't waking up. He wasn't waking up no matter how much he really wanted to wake up.
¬"I was looking for a video camera. Not a fancy one or anything, but just something to calm my nerves. Something that would... Something that would keep me from acting like such a coward."
He fell forward onto his hands and tears continued to fall as if his eyes were a fountain, causing a puddle underneath him. The tears stung. He'd given her that camera. He'd given her the camera that was supposed be her confidence. And he was supposed to be her confidence too. And he failed her. He failed her miserably. Her death was evidence of that. Her body here, cold and unmoving tied to that cross. This wasn't a nightmare. This was real.
Root looked up, his eyes settling on Willow. His expression hardened into anger. A bandaged fist of his still healing hand balled up into a fist. He zeroed in on the fellow student ignoring everything else around him. "You told me to open up my heart." Root spoke softly, in a deep, almost dangerous tone. Root rose and slowly walked over to where Willow was, any response of the trickster's going in one ear and out the other. Finally, when he was near the boy, Root spoke again, still not paying attention to anything that the trickster might have said as he approached. "Look at what that fucking did. It's my fault she's dead. I knew this was going to happen. I-I couldn't protect her. I knew that-that if I opened my heart up, I would lose yet another person I loved. It's all my fault, Willow. " His fist unclenched and he looked down at the trickster before falling again to his knees. "Why did this have to happen?" He let his head drop and his eyes closed, not putting in the effort to keep them open. He didn't have the fight left in him. He was giving up. He couldn't do anything more. He couldn't do this. There was no reason to keep on going. Mariko was gone.
"There's not more point, Willow. What's the point?" Root squeezed his eyes harder the tears dripping from his face a little faster for that split second. In a swift, quick movement, Root took the gun he'd been carrying around for defense out, holding it against the side of his head, his finger on the trigger ready to pull it. "I can't live in a world without her. It hurts. It hurts so much. I hurt those I care about. It's just like my mother. She's dead. They're both dead. It's all my fault. It's all my fault. I couldn't protect her." It would be so easy to just end it now. Pull the trigger and just let go. His finger rested on the trigger, but didn't pull it. He was hesitating. He was scared. He wanted to die, but he was too afraid to die.
Why couldn't it have been him instead of her? Why couldn't he be the one dead? Why did she have to die? Why? The tears were cascading down his face right now and dropping onto the ground he was looking at, his eyes slowly opening finally accepting this wasn't a dream. It was real. And she was dead. He just wanted it all to end. He didn't want to continue. His heart was broken, ripped from his chest by the killer. By this game, by the mastermind, by Monokuma, by himself, for not protecting her. He was guilty and he needed to bring himself to justice. It was all his fault. It was all his fault. Words: 1448 | @next

Great. Just great. Willow was going to have to thank Ignia for bringing Taro here of all places. This would be a lot harder with him around. Root being heartbroken was expected and while suicidal behavior was within the range of expectations he didn't quite expect it to happen this soon. Still it was better for him to have an outburst here then it was while he was alone.
Willow couldn't let Root die here. Nor could he let him give into despair. Besides the obvious benefits to having the scientist alive and not in a fugue state (namely his use in the investigation, trial and also any possible escape attempt) he was also his friend. Seeing him in pain like this wasn't pleasant. and he certainly didn't want to see him die.
Now he had to say the words he had been thinking of since he saw Mariko's body.
"Root, I know it hurts. It hurts everybody here. Mariko was a wonderful girl and a good friend. And I know it hurts you most of all. You cared for her deeply. Just like I cared for....Adrianna and Saoirse. It's like you lost a part of yourself. Like pieces of your soul left with hers. Like there is a hole that can' be filled. Even worse is that you feel guilty for it. That you were the cause of it. That she would still be alive if it wasn't for you. That your selfishness caused this to happen. That your incompetence is at fault and that if you were just better...she wouldn't have died." Willow started. He spoke softly, his voice filled with grief, both past and present.
"But your wrong. That is only your ego talking. You couldn't have done anything to prevent this. You only think that you are worthless because you can't see yourself through another's eyes. You are not worthless to me and you sure as hell weren't worthless to her. You want to leave this world behind? That is your choice and I can't stop you. But if you do you are leaving behind people who care about you. Who will grieve when your gone. You will force the same pain you are experiencing on others. You may be a stubborn asshole and a bit of an idiot at times, but your my friend here Root. I care about the others but...really you and Alexia are all I have left here. " Willow continued. He was keeping it together but only barely.
"Mariko wouldn't want you to give up. She would want you to keep fighting. To get out of here and help make the world a better place. To find happiness. Killing yourself would be an insult to her, a rejection of the love she gave you. A denial that her feelings mattered. It would be an utter waste and hurt your friends. It would also be a denial of yourself, your own dreams and hopes and all the happiness you may experience. Your a logical person Root, so I am sure that you can puzzle out the Pros and Cons for yourself. " Willow got to his feet. He couldn't kneel forever. For once he was going to try and take his own advice.
"Now Root. It's time for you to get to your feet. Don't worry, you can lean on me as much as you want. I don't mind. We can spread out our burdens between us. I am sure that we are strong enough to carry them together. Let's get going, we have to do this. For Mariko and all the others." Willow said. He had his hand extended for Root to take, tears were in his eyes but there was a gentle, reassuring smile on his face. The trickster was ready for this, he was ready to solve this crime and help his friends.
Maybe this would be the last murder they had to face.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. He listened, his breath slow and deliberate. He knew he was right. He knew that Willow was right. Logically he knew that he shouldn't… that he couldn't… but that didn't make his emotions change. The sadness, depression. The pain. No matter the logic he tried to apply his mind didn't agree. It was different than nearly every other moment. When his mother died, she gave him her last words and that was what kept him fighting. But now Mariko was gone and he couldn't never see her smile again. He could never hear her laugh or speak or pull her hoodie over her head or blush or do anything ever again, except lie there cold, and dead.
He dropped the gun to his side and looked up at Willow. Revenge. That was what he had to fight for. To punish those responsible. It was just like with his mother as well, he could finish his time machine and go back in time. He could save them all. He could save his mother; he could stop this from happening. He could save Adrianna, Saoirse, Mariko and everyone else. Mariko and his mother were the most important, but the other two and everyone else was a nice little benefit that would come from it. He would correct his mistakes. He could protect those he loved. He didn't have to let this happen. He would save them all. He would save everyone.
Root stared at the hand that Willow offered for several moments before he took it with his right, his left holding onto the gun, slack at his side. "I-ignia is injured. She's at the ? ? ? Room. I-It blew up. Mugen's there." Root lifted the gun and offered it to Willow. "I won't… hurt myself, but you should take this, just in case." He didn't trust himself when he was emotional and illogical like this. He had to keep going at least until they caught everyone behind this or he fixed this whole situation by changing time. He had to push forward for now, endure the pain for them, for the hope of saving them from this terrible fate.

Willow took the gun and pocketed it. That was a good first step. His words meant something to Root. Maybe the trickster could really help these people. He had to.
"Thank you. I'll check on Ignia, make sure she's alright. Stay here alright? I'll bring Taro with me. I don't want you worrying about him. I'm very proud of you Root. Your stronger then you know." with those last words Willow left, dragging Taro with him. He needed to be fast and help Ignia. Then they could all start this investigation in earnest. Root mentioned Mugen as well. Hopefully he was alright. He hadn't been able to spend as much time with the Mononake as he intended to but he seemed a gentle and kind spirit.
No need worrying about that now. He would see when he got there. Regardless it seemed Birdie wasn't lying about the tarp after all.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root stared at Willow as he left, allowing himself to pause for a moment, trying to not focus on the cross behind him. Taro was luckily dragged away, and while he was overcome with the impulse to shoot himself again for a split second, he no longer had a gun on him. He didn't trust himself with this pain, as he already knew he would have those impulses. That's why he handed the gun to Willow in the first place. He was utterly alone now, except for the body of Mariko Nakazawa on that cross. He wanted so badly to just untie her and… give her some dignity. She shouldn't be tied up to the cross like that. It was a stupid symbolic religious thing, and Root hated God. While he didn't know her religious views as they had only known each other for a short time. Either way, it hurt him, because to him, God was an asshole. He took people away from him, or at least didn't do anything to save those he loved. If he was real, he just stood by and let the people he loved die.
Root turned around and stared at the corpse on the cross, the tears continuing to fall. He sat down his legs out in front of him because his legs couldn't take this much work. He needed to sit down. "H-Hey Mariko. We finally have some alone time again. I was looking for you this morning. Y-You'd be proud," Root said the tears unyielding in their fall, his voice cracking like he was a couple years younger, the pain coming through in his voice, bearing it all out, not holding back because someone was in the room, because he was all alone, and he felt safe that he could just let it all out, "I did my laundry and… and I brought you sandwiches." He looked back at the dropped sandwiches on the floor. "Ha ha. Sorry, I dropped them… I can get you some more. I…" Root swallowed and looked down for a moment before peering back up at Mariko there. "God, I miss you already. You're right here in front of me. But you're not. You're gone. And… and I miss you so much. Why did you have to die? Mariko. I-I love you. P-Please come back. I-I need you. Please. Come back. I love you. I love you. I love you."
He was completely alone. And he felt the feeling he was so used to. Over the years since his mother died he had become numb to the feeling, and pushed himself away from the world. Or he let himself think he had become numb, but it was just eating away at him. The hole in his heart had been filled when he met her, the vacuum had been filled by the adorable young green haired girl. And now he felt like his heart not only had a hole but had been entirely ripped out of his chest and he was slowly bleeding out. He laid back and stared at the ceiling.
"I love you too Alex," her voice rang in his ears, even though he knew that it wasn't real, it made him almost smile, "You'll never be alone. I'll always be with you."
"You have to keep on living. We will only live if you keep on remembering us." This time it was his mother talking. "Oh, Alex, we loved you so much. But please, don't let our sacrifice be in vain. Don't let us have died for nothing. That pain just shows that you're human. It hurts, but you must push on."
Everything was telling him to keep on living, but he was afraid of hurting more people, maybe hurting Willow seeing as he was the only person he really cared about. Sure, Alexia and Ignia were nice, but it wasn't like he cared a ton about them. He actually considered Willow a friend and it was worrying. Willow would be next. He would hurt Willow. He would hurt Willow just like he hurt everyone else. Why should he keep on going just so that Willow will suffer? He wasn't worth it. No matter what Willow said.

Taro walked in while Root was down on his knees making a sad attempt at some sort of reconcile with his inner turmoil.
"You want to know what she thought? She thought you were a killer who brought about the death of your mother by violently beating a woman to death with your belt because Daddy never loved you.
He pulled out the tape recorder: "For once, you're right, I blame myself, because I killed her. I'm not mad at her dying before my dad, I'm pissed at myself for killing her instead of him." Root's voiced echoed throughout the church.
"Even then, Mrs. Nakazawa still confessed her love for you. She didn't care. The blind love was reciprocal. I hope you understand that, reasonably, the only one who would use the motive of bringing an additional person from the depths would have been Willow. Willow, who was most likely jealous of your infatuation with Mariko and the sole fact that the woman you swore to protect lived while the two that he swore died. How far will you think Willow will go to save Alexia? We both know that if Alexia was smart at this point, she should actively hurt the case. So, Mr. Root, let's both take on the dilemma we have here. The dilemma of a man who killed to save the integrity of a woman he deeply cares for. What do you say Root? Let's bring down that bastard Willow for this!"
Willow Fey will go down for this. Taro will make sure that happens.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root was staring at the ceiling on his back, sobbing when he heard the voice of someone he really didn't want to hear right now. He quickly sat up and forced back any new tears. He wiped his face of the current tears, though he couldn't hide the irritated red trails on his face from the tears he had let fall. He stood up after prepping his face and turned towards Taro, the whole time listening to what the asshole had to say. He recorded him. He had lied to Mariko about… unless he was just trying to get under his skin again. He was lying, trying to get him to feel worse. Trying to get a rise out of him. Well, he wouldn't succeed. No, he had to be the bigger man here.
"I'd rather believe Willow over you. You say it makes sense, but Willow would never kill Mariko. I-I wouldn't put it past him to kill for Alexia, just as I was thinking about killing for Mariko. He's a better man than me, so I doubt that he was behind this. However, if you really want some really true logic, who's to say it wasn't you? You're a fucking worthless piece of shit who has had it out for me, for who the hell knows why. Oh I wonder what is the best way to fuck with me? Take her away. Take her away from me." He was on the verge of tears again, unable to hold them back much longer. "She told me you were looking for a way to destroy me. And look at that, you fucking succeeded."
Root took slow deliberate steps towards Taro. When he was near the younger boy he stopped and held his arms out wide. "Just kill me now. You've taken everything away from me already. Just finish it. Just finish me. Kill me. End this. Stop taking out whatever you hate about me on the people I care about. Leave them all alone. Whatever you plan is, whatever your reason for hating me like this, finish it. Punch me, choke me, shoot me, tear me apart, rip out my organs, do whatever the hell you want. Just end it… Please." The last word came out in almost a wimper as he held his arms straight out to his sides in submission. He wouldn't fight back. He wanted to be killed. He no longer had the means to do it to himself, at least for now. Maybe if Taro killed him, all of his past sins could be atoned for, because if Taro killed him, Taro would in turn be killed too, and could no longer cause harm to anyone ever again.

"Nobody's killing anyone here." Willow said as he arrived at the church. He had been listiening at the door slightly before the beginning of Root's speech and had caught the end of Taro's. "Let's bring that bastard Willow down"? For some reason Taro had a grudge against him. Probably because he was good at trials and called Taro out on his bullshit. Still...that seemed to not be the only reason. Taro had been after him from the beginning. Had that all really been because Willow was an easy scapegoat?
"Taro I don't want to hear anything out of you. Not a single fucking word. Blaming me for murders is practically your MO at this point. Feel free to raise your "concerns" at trial. See if anyone listens to you. " Willow said. His gun was out and pointing at Taro.
"As for you Root....thank you for trusting in me. I won't ever betray that trust. You are a true friend. The two of us are getting out of here. Together. Alright?" Willow said. He had to get Root to understand that he meant something to people.
Now it was a matter of waiting until everybody else showed up. He hadn't seen Alexia all morning and he was starting to get anxious.

Ignia walked into the church behind Willow. "Make that three, Willow.", she said. "Without ya two we would be lost at the trials." She coughed. "In fact, make that six. You two, me, Alexia, Iocus 'n' Koji. We'll make it outta here alive. Monoworld'll burn along with Taro 'n' our mastermind. I'll see to it myself."
She didn't have anything else constructive to say. Willow was better with words than her, anyway. But there was a small chance she got through to the grieving Scientist.
